View Full Version : Debian should be based on Ubuntu...

I've got a beef with Debian:

-Despite many many hours spent trying to get a working Debian box, I am finally giving up. I want to pull my hair out. Nothing nice is installed by default.

-Everything I've read about Debian is false. It is not newb friendly. They expect you to configure everything yourself.

-Being that Ubuntu is based off of Debian, I expected better. I still can't get sound to work.

-Ian/Debra? Naming an OS after yourself? Bah!

-Anything I try to install isn't available in the repos. Or is some "free only" inferior version, as is the case with virtual box or "Iceweasel".

-Nobody can give good advice over at their forums. "What have you tried so far?" Nobody said "RTFM" but might as well have.

-Ruddy, outdated versions of programs are onlly available in the repos. This is supposed to be the latest and greatest! Debian Etch, "stable" ...rrriiiiggghht.

-Originality is nowhere in sight. From .debs (which seem copied from .rpms) to Synaptic (copied from Portage-Gentoo).

-Core Debian values (Social Contract) seem laughable when you can install non-free software directly from their own repos.

-KDE support is seriously lacking. I know it comes with Gnome by default but I couldn't even get KDE4 to run.

-Security comes unconfigured as well. It almost seems non-existent, no firewall enabled by default, I had to add my username to the groups file over and over to get certain things to work properly.

All in all I am an unhappy camper that will probably go back to Ubuntu. What say you?

Disregard everything I stated in this post. I use it as my primary OS and would recommend nothing else. :)

:lolflag:
came to your senses did we?

i use debian etch/lenny custom install, tried everything else, always come back to debian. sure it takes time to wrap your brain around it, but after that it's all good.
ubuntu is great if your just getting in, debian is a upgrade for when you feel your ready to walk your own path.
come on say it with me "ooohhhhmmmm" i am 1.

Debian is decent, but I prefer ubuntu for simplicity

I say this was funny. :)

I had a feeling you were joking when I read:

- Everything I've read about Debian is false. It is not newb friendly. They expect you to configure everything yourself.and I was positive you were joking when I read this:

-Ian/Debra? Naming an OS after yourself? Bah!

I still remember when Debian was considered one of the easy to use Linux. Anyways it still the most stable and least resource intensive and thats why I use it.

But Ubuntu is better for the new user there is no doubt in that but really Linux Mint has taken Ubuntu's place as the newbie distro leaving Ubuntu as, I am not sure its place now.
