I'm very sorry to be asking such a newbie question but I've just installed Quake 2 & Quake 2 Data using the Synaptic Package Manager.
Firstly, I don't think the download has worked correctly as there should be around 400MB of files but it took only a few seconds to download everything and looking in /usr/lib/games/quake2 there seems to be only 1.7MB of files.
Secondly, I have absolutely no idea how to execute the game once it has downloaded! Could someone point me towards a tutorial that explains installing and executing programs etc.

Thanks in advance!

taurus gave me this link explaining how to install and run things in ubuntu http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/

But I am still wondering why Synaptic Package Manager did not download all of the files for Quake 2. Do I need to own a copy in order to play this?

I belive you need the PAK0.PQ2 file (or smthn similar) from the Q2 CD, that weights around 400MB. Stick it in the data directory of your quake 2 installation. Alternatively, you can use an installer from the internet instead of Synaptic
e.g www.liflg.org

stupid question where does it put the executable? I can't figure out how to start the darn thing. I've installed the quake2-data package and then reconfigured it to install from the cd. Just not sure how to start the game. I sort of expected something named quake2 would be in one of the binary directories in my path.
