I have made a point in experiencing first and then judging later. All I know is this. Years ago I read 32bit was trash 16bit is better. I read Windows Vista is trash and Xp is better. Even more lately I read 64bit is not any faster than 32 and compatible with nothing.
I have never tried BSD. I have tried both Windows and Linux. All I know is that once I tried Linux it made me laugh at the futility of my years of frustration with Windows. It cannot be all that bad and sloppy, if the most primary used OS is the one I had just left to now use Linux.
64bit is faster. I like Vista far more than Xp, if only it were not so bloated. What others say, especailly in the media may not always be true.

At some point I mean to try out BSD, but until then I can't say if it is better than Linux or not. Even if I do try it I suspect my opinion will be subjective and just because one suits me more than the other doesn't make one better overall.
For now I just know that for almost all things, I like Linux better than Windows.

The author or complainer may infact have some point or form of validity, but is really wrong in the big picture. He is constrained to his mindset of making money and having a monopolistic type one place for all users; One way for all. BSDs are good as well, but do not have enough support yet. Until that time comes folks would be skeptical to use it.
I love DesktopBSd, but that is because of some parallels to its desktop environment and ease of use I have come to expect from the linux distros.
A linux OS, for the price of nothing is what is my primary OS for everything except one f2p game made by game company that would work if not for an exploitative app called gameguard on it. Else, I would play it on my linux OS.
Do you claim an OS is garbage because it adhers to what the developers and users want and not enough to some core things you want in an OS. Here lies the beauty of linux. You do not have to follow one way or one design, you have so many options. You can take your pick from easy to medium to challenging, more power, more customization. etc. In all cases the OS is what you make of it and can satisfy almost all computing needs. The OS supports a ton of applications and even many key window applications would run on it should user require it via a free app in linux.
Can an OS that has made so many users like myself smarter, more empowered in PC knowledge and affords us apps to run and do tasks for free that would otherwise cost us 1000.00 of dollars garbage. I think not.
Never judge until you use the OS from the enduser's perspective. For most it is great. For those that do not like it, there is Windows XP, Vista, MacOSX, BSD, Haiku, DOS, Unix, Solaris, etc...
If that were the case I would point to folks using Solaris more so than BSD, but BSd is better supported than Solaris; And Linux depending on the choice tends to be better supported than the BSds. windows XP is more supported than linux. This does not make either or any of them garbage.

There is no technical expertise displayed in that article at all. It is not a surprise that someone who is developing rival operating system software has criticism of the project with which they aren't involved. It looks like a rant, it smells like a rant, the cricitism isn't qualified anywhere in the text, and there are many needless personal attacks. In particular this comment:
You know what I found? Right in the kernel, in the heart of the operating system, I found a developer's comment that said, 'Does this belong here?' What kind of confidence does that inspire? Right then I knew it was time to switch.
shows either a disturbing lack of integrity or simple ignorance toward the methods of Linux kernel development. The sort of source code commenting mentioned is a valuable form of communication between developers of related systems useful for avoiding stepping on one another's toes. "Does this really belong here?" doesn't indicate there is anything wrong with the function of the code at all, only that it might be helpful to those hacking in other systems if it were relocated more strategically.
There is no harm done to the community when users bounce between Linux and the BSD's. Most BSD and Linux developers are courteous to one another, share code, and even occasionally work on both projects simultaneously. It is little attention junkie stunts like that article that hurt the free software community by inviting unneeded conflicts. I am surprised that a literary agency as prominent as Forbes would have allowed such tripe to get published under their banner.

Even the title of the article seems to attempt to be personally offensive.

This journalist is a perfect example of a professional troll. Someone who "trolls" for a living.
See, some time awhile ago, journalists discovered that by pissing off it's reader base is only bad when you have a reader base. Basically, if you can't a attract a loyal following [because your content sucks] an alternative way to get page views is to troll random people on the Internet for the hope your trife gets spread around the communities you are trolling.

Oddly enough, John Dvorak has specifically described his writing style in exactly this way. He didn't use the word "troll", but apart from that, your description is exactly the same as his.

It sounds as if they're criticizing the kernel. Doesn't BSD still use X windows, Gnome, KDE, GIMP, AmaroK and all that?
