View Full Version : Debian dumps Flash

I just read that Debian is removing Flash from its repository: Flashplugin-nonfree has been removed (see below), as this is closed source and we don't get security support for it. For security reasons, we recommend to immediately remove any version of flashplugin-nonfree and any remaining files of the Adobe Flash Player.

I'm trying to use Gnash, but a lot of sites dont work for me. Its frustrating that something nonstandard and closed source has so much popularity.
I'm looking forward to SVG+Javascript+ogg/theora to take over the role of flash, Firefox 3 already has support for svg+javascript. And I saw some screenshots of a theora video playing in firefox too!

I've got the feeling that's precisely why they considered they could simply remove it from their repos without raising a major uproar in the Debian community.

sounds like a good idea. closed source stuff holds back linux.
in hardy totem has a youtube plugin (that can search and play videos). or you can try miro.

It's a real shame the w3c video tags didn't make it, or rather the ogg/theora part I think. Or is that battle not over yet?

That's pretty cool! Too bad one of them crashed Konqueror though :lolflag:

This stems from webmasters trying to be too damned clever. I believe in the adage "KISS" (Keep It Simple, Stupid", all my websites are based on this so everyone can use them, that is the essential of communication.
I use "Vnu" to manage the .html files and Open Office for the .pdf files.
I did get a few complaints about pages overlapping the display and eventually found that it was due to the screen resolution used when the .html pages were written. I now always use a width of 1028 pixels for writing web pages.

SVG+Javascript+ogg/theora

I've seen SVG animation, and boy its cool. Animation part of SVG works only in Opera out-of-the-box.
And SVG is so cool to build, all you need is a text editor or a small xml editor. For advanced stuff use Inkscape.

You can install it with the etch-backports repositories.
