I'd say download a Virtual Machine, like Virtualbox or VMWare, and try them out to see if you like them. Basically its all personal choice.

Best Linux distro is the one your friend uses.
Personally, I would use any Debian/Debian-based distro.

I've been using quite a lot of different distros, mainly in virtual environments. Because of this, I haven't been able to fully enjoy the 3D-features of all distributions, but I still think I've got a general feel of a lot of them.
What I can say is that I really enjoy using Debian/Debian-based distributions. It's just so easy to get into, and you rarely have to consult the documentation. Still, I've enjoyed using Arch, Slackware and other light weight distributions, mainly because they run so fast and are so stable once you have them set up.

Generally it depends on what level you're at, and what you plan to do with it. You (thread starter) apparently like distros that are more or less all set up for you once you install them, and I can understand that. After all, I use Ubuntu as my main OS simply because it's so incredibly easy to use, and whenever I upgrade/reinstall, reconfiguring it is insanely easy.

I highly recommend either installing anything you want on a spare machine, or in a virtual environment. It's a lot of fun!

Advanced Desktop: Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit (Easy, fast, and looks good).
Portable/Mininal: Puppy 3.01 (Takes like 0.1% of my resources to run).

Debian-based (what you start with you usually stick to)

I prefer straight Debian because it seems to me to be the least messed around with, and more oriented towards the idea that the value is in the freedom than Ubuntu. I am also designing my own from source build system for a personal use GNU/Linux based on ideas from Linux from Scratch and DIY Linux.

Gonna try soon:

ArchLinux
Gentoo

Not necessarily in that order.

I'm quite partial to Ubuntu, Zenwalk, and though it's technically not a distro (but it's built on Gentoo, so I'm counting it ;) ) SysRescueCD for recovery needs.
