View Full Version : Should Kubuntu be dropped?

Whenever I see a comment about Kubuntu, it's always something negative. "It's an afterthought" "it doesn't get the attention it should" "it has too few developers" "it's ridiculously buggy compared to other KDE based distros" etc...
So my question is, is Kubuntu actually as bad as everyone appears to be saying it is? And if so, should it be dropped?

No, it's not bad, and no it shouldn't be dropped. Essentially, the the Lenny/Sid KDE packages from Debian get altered less than the Gnome ones do. Kubuntu 7.10 was, however, quite a nice release, and the few bugs that it experienced were largely upstream ones due to the increased focus on KDE 4.

Nope and Nope,
I dunno where you get your information from, but the only thing I've read were the complaints that Kubuntu doesn't get as much attention as Ubuntu (gnome).
Even then, the community leaders are trying to remedy that or at least consider the Kubuntu feelings....
And there are plenty of *buntu derivatives that get much less love, and nobody is dropping them.

I don't think it should be dropped.
Saying that however I did try Kubuntu 7.10 and it gave me nothing but grief.:( The only flavour of Ubuntu that has done. I guess they just need to put more work into it?

Looking through your threads, it seems you only posted about one of these problems. I just replied to that thread, and I think I can most likely get you through that one. Without knowing what other problems you encountered, though, I couldn't say.

I don't have problems with it, except some weirdness with xorg.conf using nvidia driver, but it's fixable. I think Dolphin was a mistake and also changing the view buttons in Konqueror, but that can be patched fairly easily. Most people probably don't care anyway. The rest works and it's the best KDE distro for me so far. I haven't seen much advantage in others.

It is pretty rough compared to other implementations of KDE, like Arch's KDEmod. But I don't think it aught to be dropped. It introduced me (and probably countless other new users) to the great DE that is KDE, which I am now loving as a slightly-more-experienced Arch user.
So while it could use work, it's a good stepping stone to have.

Even if it was "dropped," it wouldn't go away. The community would just keep it going, even if it wasn't "official." So it might as well stick around for a while.

I don't think it should be dropped, even though I don't use it myself.
Also, slightly off topic, but K.Mandla, are you REALLY using Ubuntu 5.10? :lolflag:

very nice distro. Honest KDE, nothing else except OO.o. It shows clearly areas where pure KDE distribution is best or worst like K3b and Adept.
Not so newbie friendly as Ubuntu but I don't mind.

Ah ... only when I feel like running Xubuntu. :D

I dont think kubuntu should be dropped. KDE is is the best DE that I have come across, and Im not only saying that because I live 3 hours away from where it is developed. Personally I have had more issues with Gnome and XFCE than KDE, especially in the wireless area.

Drop Kubuntu? No! That's the distro I started off with and remains my fave out of all the Ubuntu family (and Linux in general). Only reason I'm not using it now is because my rig lacks the resources to run It properly.

Kubuntu has long been my distro of choice and my favorite KDE distribution. Myself and friends I have introduced to GNU/Linux have had LESS problems with Kubuntu than Ubuntu. I can't think why anyone would be speculating on it being dropped unless they have an agenda.

As long as maintaining Kubuntu does not affect Ubuntu, then it's all good for me.

No it shouldn't be dropped. I use it almost exclusively and love it!

Kubuntu isn't considered one of the best KDE distro's, where as Ubuntu is considered the best (at least by some) gnome distro.

And if someone says Kubuntu is bad (I don't think it is), who's fault is that ?
You wan't to talk about glaring issues ? Compiz Fusion is STILL broken. Shadows don't work properly and windeco's STILL regularly disappear when you try to use it. We all know we've long been able to use Mandriva or PCLinuxOS with KDE with flawless Compiz integration. Is this a genuine reason for Kubuntu to be dropped ? Or an example of a lack of support in the first place ? What is going on here ? How is it that just about any other distro has no problem with Compiz but Kubuntu seems to be continuously hamstrung like this ?
BUT you know what, Canonical could even now say, "we can't be stuffed fiddling about with Compiz on KDE 3.5.9 but we will support the further developent of KWin's composite manager for KDE 4.x becuase we think thats much more practical". I think KDE users would be happy with that... it would sooth some simmering tempers.
But this talk of dropping Kubuntu is just insane. Right now is a most exciting period with KDE 4.x rapidly developing, it will soon blossom into one of the most awesome desktops ever and you wanna talk about dropping Kubuntu...
Wow, talk about spoiling the party...
