There is a Firefox extension -- FasterFox -- that will give you a nice GUI for tweaking Firefox settings for fast rendering (we had a few howto's about Firefox tweaking). These are settings that would otherwise be buried in "about:config".
Fasterfox sports the ability to tweak all the usual settings Firefox hackers recommend (pipelining, initial paint, etc etc), and also have the option to bring back prefetching to the fox! Another side feature is the ability to disable popups coming from Flash or other plugins.
In my use, I've found it to significantly speed up Firefox web browsing, probably mostly thanks to prefetching. I've yet to see any problems come out of the plugin, so I'm pretty pleased.
This should obsolete most of the other Firefox tweaks around.
