Did you try going to System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts and trying to set up your special keys from there? This has always worked for me for many different brands of keyboards to get all the multimedia and etc. keys going.

It's easy, just click the item you want to set up and then hit the special key on your keyboard to map it to that key. It takes effect instantly.

Good Luck.

Forward and back I have always used my mouse side buttons for. On the keyboard, it would be alt/left arrow and alt/right arrow.

Zoom, I also use my mouse + keyboard. ctrl/scroll wheel.
on the keyboard it would be ctrl/+ and ctrl/-

What other special keys do you need?

I'm sorry, I don't know how to add any other shortcuts to the list in keyboard shortcuts.

Have you tried going to System > Preferences > keyboard and on the layouts tab, next to the keyboard model, clicking the choose button and trying one of the Microsoft Natural entries?

I'm not sure if these changes take effect instantly or if they require a log off/log on or maybe even a restart.
