Hey
The first linux OS i tried out were a 2004 version of Mandriva, i would very much like to burn out a live CD-ROM and try it again, because i liked it a lot. the problem is, i don't know if there is a live version of the 2008 Mandriva, can any of you guys tell me if there is?, and how i should burn it, image file or extract the image file and then burn?

Try at www.mandriva.org. Choose your country from the download. Do not copy the image to the CD, burn from image to CD (burn image in most writing programs).

Yes, look for the 'One' cd. There's two versions, one with KDE and one with GNOME.

Normally I prefer gnome, but Mandriva has long been a KDE distribution, and sometimes that might be more polished. Personally I run Mandriva as KDE. Also a new version is out in a couple of weeks I think.

Ditto. I am normally a GNOME/E17 user, and find KDE not very good on Ubuntu, but after I used Pendrivelinux (which is basically Mandrivia for a USB), I can say the exact opposite is true about KDE on it! :) Only beef I have is the menus, and that can be fixed.

That would depend on what desktop environment you prefer. I am a KDE user, but many others prefer Gnome. Nothing wrong in choosing any of them, just a matter of preference.

Sorry, I don't understand your question. What do you mean by installers? Kubuntu uses the same package database as Ubuntu. Under the graphical interfaces, both system are more or less the same. If what you mean is .deb packages, they are independent from the interface.
Of course KDE and GTK programs will need Qt libraries and GTK libraries respectively, but those can be installed in both environments.
I use KDE without any issues or limitations.

Maybe I can help. What were the problems? Normally it should work with:
sudo dpkg -i package_name

Hmm, for some reason I doubt that person would be able to understand what is going on. Anyway, you should recommend to your friend to change the passwords he might have used from that computer.

I think you're right when you say the person properly can't understand whats going on... ( I'd like to see the look on his face when he booted the computer...) any ways, the thing about the password wont be a problem, this guy changes his password often..
