As of now, the chosen name for Ubuntu 8.10 is "Intrepid Ibex" (which doesn't actually follow the standard Ubuntu naming scheme...).

I personally think it should be "Icy Ibex" (it sounds kinda cool IMO and it actually follows the standard Ubuntu naming scheme by having an adjective ending in 'y').

I'd like to know what everyone else thinks about the name and whether or not it should even be changed.

I think most people will much prefer to refer to this release by the noun instead of the adjective. That's a first.

It's also the only other release besides Dapper for the adjective to not end in a "y"

I like the name, and is makes sense. It follows the alpha, DD, EE, FF, GG, HH, II and it is the first beta for the next long term support.

Intrepid:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Intrepid

Fearless; bold; brave.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibex

Legend had it that the ibex's spine was rigid and non-straight, so that the goat could not look back. If threatened from behind, it would jump off a precipice and land unharmed on its horns

So it should be fearless, boldly going where no Ubuntu has gone before and moving forward head first, no looking back. And if you look at the pic on Wikipedia, that thing has some huge horns!

Personally I think this is the best name so far. Dapper was dapper, but it was a duck, ducks look like they are swimming peacefully, but under the water they paddle like there is no tomorrow, so it is an illusion of grace. Edgy was not edgy, feisty was not feisty (but a great release none the less). Gutsy was the edgiest, and with the beta being the final, a little disappointing. I hate the name for 8.04. Bring on Intrepid Ibex!

meaningless names!!!! compare this with MAC OS which uses more common animal names like tiger, panther, leopard, etc., Why the bloddy hell do users care for South African "unknown" animal names??? Be more sensible guys.

Come on now Richard, no need to swear. It's not like it's that important that you should be upset. Anyway, all these names are somewhat meaningless, but amusing, in a college kid sort of way.

And the only things more commonly known that the names you mentioned that could be a name for an OS are likely to be biblical, already in commercial use, or ,probably, disgusting.

;)

Wellllll...considering Mark Shuttleworth is from South Africa and Ubuntu itself is an African term...It's kind of hard to stick to "known" animal names and stick with the arrangements too.
