I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server (AMD64) on a dual quad-core Xeon. When running cat on a large text log file or dmesg command on the local console, vmstat or top shows 100% CPU utilization on all of the 8 cores in the machine.
This affects other processes slowing them down. However, this behavior is not observed on RHEL or Fedora where the CPU load is more realistic when local console is scrolling text on the screen with the cat or dmesg command.
Any idea how to remedy this? Thanks in advance.
