Hey all! I'm plannig to buy new computer for general 6 purposes + gaming. Here's what I want to purchase:
MB:
GA-K8N-SLI bulk nForce4 4SLI ATX 2000 4*SATA PCIX 16 CICADA8201 Gigabit LAN PHY Dual channel DDR400 Socket 939, SATA, Sound
CPU:
Athlon 64 3200 939 Tray VENICE STEP E6 2000
Cooler:
THERMALTAKE TR2 cooler for AMD K8 64-BIT COOPER BASE
RAM:
1Gb (512x2) Retail Value Series DDR 400
Video:
GV-NX66T128D Geforce FX6600GT 128 mb SLI DDR III bulk
HD:
Seagate 120Gb SATA NCQ
Case I will chose later because I want to see it by myself (not some name entry in pricelist ;))
Will that hardware work OK on Ubuntu? How it handles PCI-E and SATA HDs? I'm open for you suggestions and recommendations. :)

I've had problems with sata and grub, but I don't think it's common. (and I always got it working with lilo) I think 939 is a smart choice, you can probably get a very nice CPU upgrade later - to some of those dual core AMDs. Personally I'd probably choose 6600GT as well, but would choose 200GB hard disk (same or better €/GB).
Don't know about gigabit nic support on Linux, but maybe that's not even something you chose on purpose. Will probably work fine at 100, if not 1000.
My two cents. :) I don't see problems on your specs, on the contrary. Planning to run it in 64-bit mode? Breezy?

Well, those are builtin chips and they are almost on all MBs. And I have only 10Mbit hub at home... Anyway the price is acceptable. ;)

Well, there's always not enough HD space nevertheless what HD you buy. Maybe I'll take second one in the future.

Yeah! 64 all the way! :) And yes, I plan to do further updates on that PC so choosing good MB is vital.

Em... And how about PCI-E?

PCI-E is supposedly amazing. I have not tried it yet, but I've only heard wonderful things about it. If I were in your shoes, and I did not have a budget problem, and was a hardcore gamer, I'd go PCI-E all the way. AGP is old anyways. You got an excellent layout by the way, but I'd go for 2 gig sticks instead of one.

I don't know about your card. I have tried Geforce 6200 with Turbo Cache PCI-E and it worked only with nvidia proprietary drivers ("nv" had graphical corruptions) and it was faster than my Geforce FX agp 5500 (obviously)

I am going to go to the local puter store today and buy a AMD 64 athlon 3200 for 199 and I get a free agp socket 939 mobo with it. I figure I will upgrade the mobo later when I have the money to buy a pci-e card. My Radeon 9600 card will work for now.

AMD 64 athlon 3200 for 199
$155 here :p
My Radeon 9600 card will work for now.
Will never buy ATI. Moral issues.
but I'd go for 2 gig sticks instead of one.
Well, 1GB costs $118.00 and 2GB - $250.00 (talking about dual channel).
And I'm not a millionare. :)

I still make out with the free gigabyte mobo. That still saves me $40 even if I bought it at your price and then had to buy the mobo. So I think I am getting a pretty good deal. ( I also went to pricewatch.com and could not find a better deal for both mobo and cpu.)

Buying AGP Mobo is like two steps backward instead of 1 forward. If you do basic 6 then it's OK. But I'm planing to play on that hardware. ;)

Depends on vendor. I dont want to buy some piece of crap made in basement somewhere in China. that will burn itself after a month of use.

yeah, unfortunatly it is best to stick with nvidia, because of their excellent (in comparison to ati) linux support.
get a 6600 gt, or better! maybe wait for nv to release their mainstream 7800 series cards, should be around christmas :)

Why unfortunatly? ATI sux anyway and I hate them from Rage series.

Em... Geforce7800GTX 256 mb VIVO Retail - $569.0
~570 bucks for just a video? You're crazy. Imho there's no need to buy the newest hardware because it will drop twice in a price with few month.

For video I'd go with a r200 ATI card, the best one in that series in the ATI Radeon 9250, why because the XOrg tree has a good driver for it, fully accelerated and EXA works with it, no need for a closed source driver to run X with all it's modern day bling beauty like composite.
And it's dead cheap since it's a fairly old model.. it plays games like enemy territory well though.
