Which browser would be better to use to avoid spyware or malware?

IMO either is fine. On an ubuntu desktop, I seriously doubt you're going to have to worry about either malware or spyware, as it's nearly all (if not DEFINITELY all) written for the Windows platform.

And regardless of what browser you use or what OS it's running under, you should be wary of anything you download from an untrusted source, and be careful what packages you install.

Opera should have less problems since it does not have as many "plugins".
But both are fine.
