Just looking for a list of "Must Have" apps for Gutsy AMD64, as for me, i'm probably geared toward the multimedia type apps mostly but i also need to hit citrix for work, etc. New to the linux scene and just curious about any killer apps i should absolutely have on my machine. Anything from browser tools/add-ons, communication (IM'ing, irc, VoIP), download managers, email tools/apps, security-privacy (file encryption, secure file deletion, firewalls, adware/spyware, anti-virus, password managers...some here probably no longer an issue w/i linux like they were with win), graphics/photo (editors, processors, resizers, screen caps), multimedia (media servers, audio editing/encoding, video editing/encoding, cd/dvd utilities, media players, codecs), server tools (ftp deamons, mail servers), networking (ftp apps, network admin tools, usenet readers, remote computing, telnet/ssh, time synchronization), web authoring, system utilities, rss feed readers, weather monitors, etc., etc., etc. Anything you think deserves a nod for being a great app.
Thanks.

As far as apps I couldn't live without:
For Music:
I'm a huge fan of Amarok and the new Mozilla music jukebox Songbird for managing a large music library. For a "lighter" music player, Audacious or the Winamp-based Xmms are also popular.
For chat:
Pidgin can handle my four chat accounts at once, is somewhat configurable, and has a pleasant UI--light but not featureless. It destroys AIM, if you ask me. Plus--plugins, anyone?
For system utilities:
I can't live without Conky. I had it set up to display way too much info--I had to pare it down a little--but it still displays everything I need to know, instantaneously, even the weather. I also use Rainlendar2 Lite.
Other stuff:
Of course, the GIMP and OpenOffice, which come by default, to complete a functioning system.
I don't know which of these are/aren't available in 64-bit, but you can certainly check things out.

well first thing for me was i needed a composite manager so i could tweak the settings of my compiz fusion, if u need a chat client try emesene i love it, also aMSN is apparently very good if you need to use alot of the webcam voice bla blah, i prefer thunderbird to evolution for mail/ also i didnt agree too much with open office since i couldnt be bother to convert the macros i use for excel with in open office spreadsheet so if there is any programs u need to run that are windows only check out WINE its great! media players XMMS. GIMP is excellent for photos and such, its on par with photoshop.
When using linux remember if you are stuck google is your best friend. One thing ive found out bout linux community if there a problem theres always a useful solution somewhere Especially at the beginning. Also linux has add./remove programs which unlike smelldows XP/vista etc has a list of like 20,000 programs for you to choose from and install which all have some sort of rating.
btw ktorrent is excellent for torrents ;)

Eh this may sound stupid, but the "Terminal", "Mousepad" (Gedit in Xubuntu) and "Build-essential" are three I absolutely cannot live without, although I am sure that it is not what you meant :lolflag:
Another two is "2frodos" in order to make the text linefeeds from DOS / Windows in Linux format and "Conky" indeed (great system monitor). Last two I need to mention are Kompozer for making HTML pages and Inkscape for making SVG based drawings.

Many "must have" apps depend on what you really need. It's hard to know what you need without thoroughly exploring your system and how it works. I would suggest reading (and/or bookmarking) some simple guide for whatever your looking for.
