Been using Ubuntu on a PC for a while...now i've bought a new SantaRosa MacBook black. I thought i had to install 32 bit Intel version.....but somewhere i've read that i should use the amd 64 bit version of Ubuntu 7.10. Is that right?
thanks guys..

I'm all for 64bit version, see it like an attitude.. some things are a bit harder (flash anyone?), but generally speaking everything works for me, and I'm really happy, I do a lot of multimedia editing and I feel this setup is better than 32bit one... faster, indeed... apart from that.. It's all about choices... ^_^

thanks guys..It is a x86_64 CPU meaning that it is capable of executing both 32bit and 64bit code. Either version will work fine and it is a matter of preference.

This is a common answer to this common question, but I still wonder : WHY would you prefer 64 to 32bit or vice versa?

All I can see so far is that there are more 32bit "non-official" packages on the web than 64 ones. And indeed that's the reason why I'm still using the 32bit version :)

That doesn't really matter either as you can quite easily run 32bit executables in 64bit systems. (This is how flash works now).

Eventually, everything will be 64bit, so it help to move now anyway, and there is a slight performance boost in some instances of use.

There is a whole forum specifically for 64bit users:

The advantages/disadvantages is in the sticky:
