I thought I'd bring up this exclusive I have on Free Gamer about a [potentially open source] Portal-inspired game called Portalized.
It has portals that scale (i.e. go through and the world changes size), physics that work through portals, and soon lighting that works through portals. It should be cross platform (ogre3d is the graphics engine) when the beta is available (next few weeks). It's pretty funky:

Digg it if you want :D

Correction, if I may.
Last I checked (a few days ago), the author said himself that he was not sure whether he will or will not make it open source, as he was advised not to. It will be free, and available for linux, just not NECESSARILY open source.

From a comment:
I just got this working pretty well under wine 0.9.54. I'm using OGL mode and had to enter bind("MB_2", [[ forward() ]]) at the console to move forward ( most of the keys don't seem to work right ). Anyway.. It's quite fast on my 8800 gts.
Also I spoke to him in private and he hadn't made up his mind on the open source issue.

Actually after a private email conversation with nullsquared, I've put together an introductory overview to the benefits of open source. It'll be online sometime this week. It's a very valid issue because many people just don't understand open source very well. Some view it as all loss and no gain for the author.

Hey everybody, this is a pretty old thread but I thought I'll announce it here instead of creating a new thread:
Portalized rose from the ashes, creating this website: http://www.portalized.org
Little update on the open-source dilemma: We do honestly not know if it's going to be open source. I'm personally a huge open source and Linux/Ubuntu fan but we really have to see once the game enters a more... playable state :D
When you check the site out, feel free to also enter our forums, register, introduce yourself or post here and there :)
It will be the best way to acquire updates directly from us, the developers.

Great to hear that :P

As long as it plays on Ubuntu, I'm happy.
Edit: btw, might want to alert http://www.linuxgames.com/ about this

Of course it will run on Ubuntu! I'll personally make sure it does.
Also we will talk to several Linux sites once we get the Linux version up and running.

Svenstaro,
I have to say it looks you two are doing a terrific job.
I strongly encourage you to make the game open source. Not only will it enable people to build upon your work and impress you two in return, but it will ensure that the average novice linux user can easily have access to your work by being compiled for and included in the vast majority of linux distributions.

We are not going to decide on this too soon. Even if we choose to go open source, we would not open ourselves until we see the game ready for release. I know it kind of defeats the purpose but we like working in small team rather than one big team.
Whatever we do, please know that I'm well aware of the benefits of open-sourcing.
Thanks for the feedback :)

If you choose not to go open source at first, I'd suggest following the example of John Carmack and id Software by open sourcing after you move on to your next project(s). Whatever your licensing choice and motivations for it, I think this game has great potential and will be a benefit to gaming on Linux.

it sounds like a really good game and if you make it open sourced we will have many more good games for Linux, but even if it isn't open sourced I'm still glad where going to have a good game on Linux that's different than most of the ones we already have
