Hi,
the AMDx86_64 versions of Ubuntu are for both the AMD and the Intel 64bit platforms; as far as I know, the name "AMDx86_64" was made in a time where only AMD delivered 64bit platforms.
I run Kubuntu 7.10 AMDx86_64 on a Intel® Core 2 Duo T8100 prozessor (Lenovo Thinkpad R61).
Hope this helps,
Flo

Why they don't change the name to x86_64?

The names can be used practically interchangeably. Intel NON-Itanium 64-bit processors are based on AMD 64bit. Although called (IIRC) EM64T, it is essentially AMD 64-bit processor-compatible architecture. Of course, that's a bit oversimplified, and of course Intel has made other architectural changes, but I think that's a pretty good basic explanation.
So, for the overwhelming amount of consumer desktops, AMD64 and x86-64 are the same thing ;) Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
