I have a Dell E1705 w/ ati x1400 card. I have been online all night looking at all these games that all of you linux gamers say are great games. I have tried a couple of them and basicly none of worked in a playable sense. Every single game i played was extremely laggy and choppy.

I have a core duo 2.0 GHz card, only 1 GB ram but still i have nothing else running(maybe firefox ).
I have compiz installed and running with xgl and found performance better when i disabled desktop effects, but its unusable.

This can't be what people take about when they say its a good game. What kind of system specs are other people enjoying these games at.

Games i have tried:

Frets on Fire:
Delay between buttons pushed is like a second and sound and video is all choppy. Not Playable

Saurerbraten:
Can't use my wireless mouse while moving with the keyboard. I can't aim so its pointless to play.

Armagetron:
Actually worked adequately but it is boring.

Tremulous:
Something was wrong with the video. Gray blocks filled the screen all over.

Vega Strike:
I couldn't figure out how to move forward, and it was incredibly buggy
.
Help or incite into any of this would be great. My computer can't be to underpowered, can it?

You shouldn't use OpenGL programs while using XGl, even if you disable the desktop effects. You should try with a plain X session. I assume that if you are using XGl is because you can't use AIGLX because you are using older drivers. You should try to install the drivers from AMD website, which are faster and have AIGLX support, if you are concerned with gaming.

i thought i needed xgl for my ati x1400 card. I am using the fglrx driver, did something change.

Also how could i just start a normal x session in ubuntu 7.10 becuase it integrates the xgl into the gnome session, so you don't select xgl, just gnome and xgl kind goes with it.
