This "newer" amule package is very annoying since it has not been compiled with GTK2 support and it displays the ugly GTK1 interface.

The answer to your plead is to upgrade to Breezy, either wait for the release later this month, or do a dist-upgrade (there are uncountable threads in the forum on how to do this, do a quick search on the subject).
