View Full Version : Best Doom Port?

Hey. I love the original Doom games, and I was looking for a good port to play my .wad files.

I used llxdoom (doom legacy), in fact I used it on linux via apt before I used it on windows. One thing I noticed when I first boot it up, it freezes for about 20-30 seconds. Now, it never unfreezes (just reformatted today). So, I have been looking for a different port.

I tried something called lxdoom, which ran it in a window. I loved having it in a window, but hated not having always run and mouselook options. I also installed something called zdoom, by putting the zdoom binaries in the appropriate /usr/local files, but when i run "zdoom" it says I am missing some file having to do with C++ (not g++, some odd program). I searched in kynaptic and couldn't find it...

I want a port with either good single player support (Doom Legacy) or good Multiplayer Support (SkullTag). I don't care which as long as I get to play Doom :D

I talked to the creator of skulltag on aim, he said a Linux port is coming out soon. But in the meantime, I would like to find a better port... anyone know of good ones?

I second doomsday. Get the addon resource packs (models, textures, sfx) and its like its a whole new game. :) Makes the graphics look better than Quake II.

Check out this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=51241 thread for how to get doomsday.

Hey guys, I bet you haven't tried this port: zDoom (http://zdoom.org).
When it comes to modding, this port is the best.

about doomsday...

Is it available for linux? The screenshots look nice.

This is what I read on their site (in the 'about jDoom' section):

jDoom is an enhanced win32 port of id Software's DOOM.

prboom-plus and odamex are nice.

Doomsday and Zdoom are a license mess.

Really depends what you mean by "best".

I'm about to install 32-bit libraries to get zdoom working again on my new Feisty install... It's worth the mess for me. (I'm going to see if dpkg is smart enough to force -i386 libraries to go into the right directory on their own. It would be pretty bad if they didn't.)

Any GL port is definitely not for the "vanilla" experience, that is for sure...
