This has been rumored for a while now:
Reference the following thread on the gOS Official Forum, here (http://cafelinux.org/gosforum/index.php/topic,308.msg1333/topicseen.html#msg1333):
Not being big into rumors I have confirmed this with the gOS Dev, mekius.
10:33 mekius RAVTUX: hi
RAVTUX mekius: is it true that gOS will be changing to Gnome?
10:34 mekius yes
RAVTUX ok
10:35 RAVTUX Thanks for the 411Qoute from the #gos-dev on Freenode at the times posted.
The conversation continued at #cafeLinux...
To read a bit more in depth conversation on the subject matter please refer to the CafeLinux Forum thread, here (http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,1047.new.html#new).

and if they switch to gnome, the point will be?The point being is the decision is by Everex, not so much the gOS Devs...
It is a bit mis-guided:
Reference:
10:36 mekius yeah, they switched to gnome
mekius for the sheer fact that it was suppose to save them time and thus money, but it's just time spent elsewhere heh
10:37 mekius mostly time dealing with the same exact issues we were dealing with, hardware issuesQuote from gOS Dev mekius at #cafelinux on Freenode
Admittedly here it appears the decision by Everex is a bit misguided, as the same hardware issues will exist in Gnome.

I will have to disagree there. I think fluxbox is too limited to be used for simple home users. I think XFCE or E17 is the best, but I think it shouldn't be too light (Fluxbox) or too heavy (Gnome/KDE).
I think ratpoison for the default gOS WM is good enough though ;)

One day someone may actually put together a Ubuntu derivative with a RatPoison WM, but what they will call it is beyond me. ;)

According to Click, the CloudBook will now run a version of gOS with GNOME, instead of Enlghtenment, showing that Everex is continuing to improve their software.
hahahahaha

It's a curious decision and really removes a good bit of what made gOS unique.

Its a very bad move on their part, in my opinion. E17 was their best chance at being light, and moving to GNOME will remove a lot it had to offer. I will probably stick to ubuntu now. :(

You always have OzOs (http://cafelinux.org/OzOs/).
We will always use e17.

Dead Rat Linux!...Ubuntu Plus RatPoison with attitude.
Actually RatPoison has been shelfed and replaced by The Stump Window Manager (http://www.nongnu.org/stumpwm/),
which looks pretty awesome.
Could be called; PDX = Ubuntu + The Stump Window Manager (http://www.nongnu.org/stumpwm/) (why: Portland is also known by it's airport code; PDX, Portland also used to be called Stump Town)
Fantasy distros are fun to dream up.

I am not using a torrent, I will look into the forum.
I will have to try it on my laptop, most likely. I won't be able to run it in VirtualBox on my desktop.

I think maybe they should have went with a customized ICEwm kind of like ASUS EEE Pc with Xandros.
Its lightweight and very stable and it could be customized to look however they wanted.
E-17 I believe is still in beta and probably not the best choice for a production machine.

I've been looking for a top distro for a while now. Stable as Gnome Ubuntu, pretty as a Mac, robust enough for anything, but easier to use than the Wii. Enter Gos.
So happens, I just started a website and I'm hosting it through Google. I really like the free services they offer, and nothing would be cooler to me than a distro that meets all my requirements, and includes Google widgets!
Of course, the buttons at the bottom are links. Not widgets. Bummer. But it's still pretty, simple, fairly stable, easy to use, and it works on ancient pcs just fine!
Seems there's a common problem with burning the ISO to disk and having it boot. -- I'm still working on it. However, if this OS is going to Gnome, there's going to have to be another alternative out there.
What a disappointment.

I started thinking....
What happens when one thing in linux makes a decision to do something drastically different?
There becomes an alternative.
So just wait and see.

E17 is pretty slick, but I personally think Gnome is not bad either. The main thing that will make gOS is their configuration+app selection. So, I'm still looking forward to what they come up with.

I think they should also stick with e17, but all i'm saying is that its better to stick with xfce than gnome if they really want to change.

In a way i agree. e17 is still a little buggy, and one of my favorite programs (TV Time) doesn't work with it. However, it has a nice charm to it, and some of that charm will be lost with the switch to GNOME. Now if the GNOME version of gOS uses Engage as the dock, then it may still retain some of that charm.
I'm getting used to gOS now. Since I learned how to customize it to my liking, I'm really liking it now. I created a customized installation CD using version 2.0.2 of Remastersys (using "sudo remastersys backup") and am currently in the process of uploading it. I updated Pidgin to 2.3.1 and GIMP to 2.4.2. I created the CD a few days before GIMP 2.4.4 came out.
BTW, I'm the one who uploaded the "gOS Ultimate Edition" video on YouTube.
It makes me wonder if we'll eventually see a KDE version of gOS using KDE 4.

Since gOS has always tried to imitate OS X to some extent, using one of the *Boxes with a dock of some sort (Wbar with a gui config, perhaps?) might work well. gOS will never reach it's full potential until they begin to use Prism (http://labs.mozilla.com/2007/10/prism/) for the links on the dock. It would make the OS seem so much more professional than having its much-vaunted web apps opening in a browser.

any future for GOS with E17 then?
i got to play around with GOS rocket for a couple of days and i really liked the look.
im a sucker for the eye candy and was eager to try the release version
since the developers are dropping E17 for Gnome... are any members of the community running and possibly building on the exisiting GoS rocket distro?
i hope so
just curious.

Well I'm currently in the process of remastering gOS into an XFCE version (using Remastersys 2.0.2). I'm the one who put out the gOS Ultimate remaster. Thinking about naming it either exgOS or TINgOS (This Is Not gOS). lol

The think I always liked about gOS was that it's the perfect OS for an internet cafe. It focuses on web apps but still has programs for PDF, word processing, etc in case they are needed.

Yeah I saw that gos ultimate thread and was happy to see someone working on it. well done
One quick question though. Will you be continuing to work on it or is a "one-off" remaster? Just considering the long term usability of it. Would hate to use it for a few months and some Ubuntu update breaks it all..

Yeah I'll continue work on it. I'm gonna re-build the ISO tomorrow. I found the perfect "green" theme for it. It's the Brushed Green user interface available on xfce-look.org and gnome-look.org. And the Window Manager theme is Redmont XP.
I should point out that I'm using Xubuntu as a base. It's basically Xubuntu made to look like what gOS would look like if it were XFCE-based. So Ubuntu updates shouldn't break it.
I used SUM to load up the Usplash from gOS 1.0.1, and I edited a "list" GDM theme in GIMP to give it the gOS look. Right now I'm leaning toward the name

My suggestion for you is to not use Xubuntu as a base, but pure Xfce.
See instructions here (http://blog.csmonkey.com/2007/06/how-to-install-pure-gnomekdexfce-not.html)
:guitar:
Pure Xfce will be much faster and more configurable.

Cool. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a whirl. I should be able to uninstall most of the Ubuntu and Gnome stuff after I do what's in the instructions, right?
BTW here's a mockup of the Tingos usplash:

Can I use those instructions inside Ubuntu? I've managed to uninstall xubuntu-desktop and the Xubuntu artwork and installed some green-ish wallpapers. And I've installed the Justgreen mouse theme, customized the gOS icon theme, and installed the Green Lemon GTK theme and using the Gaudy window manager theme. It looks really good on here. I'll upload a screengrab later tonight on TinyPic.

You just use the instructions and install pure xfce in the terminal... so I think the answer to your question is yes. It installs like another WM or DE. Keep us up-to-date on how your project is going. Thanks.
