Hello! I am a recent Winblows-to-Linux convert, and Ubuntu is my first distro install. Since I have an AMD Athlon 64 processor in my six-year-old pc, I took the plunge and went with Gutsy 64-bit. The installation went absolutely flawlessly; and, thanks to KILZ and that ns-wrapper-thingie, I got flash to work on my first try. Yay!

I am currently dual-booting with XP (ick) and cannot bring myself to get rid of it completely, though....
My printer doesn't work with Ubuntu.

My Lexmark z715 is a hunk of junk anyway, so I don't mind buying a new printer. However, if someone out there DOES have a 64-bit solution for it, I would be very appreciative. I checked out "openprinting.org" or whatever the URL is, but couldn't find anything for my z715, either 32- or 64-bit, so I think I'm just SOL on that old Lexmark.

If no solutions exist for that old trash heap, what printers manufacturers have machines with 64-bit drivers? HP is preferable, since HP always has inkjet cartridges on sale in my area.

Any help offered will be greatly appreciated; thanks in advance.

*bump*

(I know other people have problems more important/severe/critical than mine)

my old epson of some sort worked flawlessly (until i twas dropped on the floor and started bleeding ink all over the paper sheets and started screaming like and old lady in severe pain every time i printed with it) (64 bit)
my new hp laserjet 1018 works flawlessly (64 bit)
my very old lexmark never worked (32 bit)

so in my experience hp and epson are both good at least

this might be of help also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters

I knew HP had decent linux support, but I didn't know to what extent....
The machine I want is the Deskjet F4180, which does printing, scanning, copying, and faxing all-in-one.

Anyway, when I try to print on my Lexmark z715 on Ubuntu, I get a ubiquitous "error while printing" message, and nothing happens. Under (System-->Administration-->Printing), Gutsy recognizes I have a "Z700-P700 Series" Lexmark printer, and it is set as the default printer. But when I click on "Print Test Page", I immediately get this:

CUPS Server Error:
There was an error during the CUPS operation:
'client-error-document-format-not-supported'

I assume that this is due to a lack of appropriate driver? Or is this something else?
Thank you, jamesford, for trying to help, but my z715 isn't listed there either.

Thank you, black hole sun for that wonderful howto!

Wow, getting all those command lines to work was a major pain in the butt; but it worked out! Yay!

Dear Microsoft Windows:
