Is there any way to run a game without Gnome or KDE? Or do i need to install some lighterweight thing to get a little better fps?

There are quite a few managers out there but I can't imagine it'll make all that much difference. XFCE is one that I've seen some posts about on here.

You can also try IceWM.

You may try to log in from gdm to failsafe terminal than you can run the game from the command line. However I have not find any difference as it is in speed, but there is a thread somewhere in the costumization part that lets you start your games in a new x server (that only runs the game) while the other x goes background. The writer of that post claims that games run faster this way, but i have not tried it.
good luck

I like Fluxbox and Windowmaker. Both have MUCH smaller footprints than XFCE, Gnome and KDE.
They won't copy your menu items over, so make sure you note your fave program name (Windowmaker is slightly less extreme - making shortcuts for Firefox, XTerm, and a few useful bits and bobs. Fluxbox pretty much leaves the menu bare except for a terminal and some Flux configuration options - so you HAVE to make some notes before you try it on your fave programs!)
Both of them can be tarted up to look pretty sexy, but come 'out of the box' pretty minimalistic - and using very few resources!
Of course, they may not load much of the Gnome/KDE services either so you may find yourself manually starting some services if you want to run some things requiring those things (find out the easy way - try them!)
If all else, it gives you a chance to experience some other windows managers. You can always uninstall them afterwards if they don't work for you!

Fluxbox is my choice but there are lighter ones to choose from. Of course, you didn't mention the game, but I rather fancy Dungeon Crawl and it doesn't require tweaking your system because it's not hungry for system resources.
