View Full Version : Please suggest to me a "must play" emulator game

So I was thinking that there are all of these different emulators for different gaming systems, with a whole ocean of different games available to play, and I haven't got the faintest idea where to start, and what's worth playing and what's rubbish, while you guys seem to know a great deal about emulator games.
So that's why I'm turning to you lot. What are the best and most important games to play in any emulator?

It really depends what sort of games you're into, Sammi. Just as on any other platforms, the variation in console games is enormous. As you say, "there are all of these different emulators for different gaming systems, with a whole ocean of different games available to play."

I know I know. I was just hoping for a few tips on classic console games that everyone should try at least once.
I've always been a PC gamer, so I know nothing about old console games. Any genre is cool.

The Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis as it's called outside Europe) is a console well worth checking out. :)
Edit: I realised I didn't reccomend any games. The Streets of Rage series is brilliant. :D

I'd definitely have to recommend Super Mario RPG for the SNES, it was the first RPG I played and I loved it, still do actually. It's quite a long game, with quite a few extra things to enjoy.
I would have to rate it as my favorite game of all time.

yeah, mario RPG for the SNES was a really good RPG. may have been my first RPG (i don't play many). it had a really good battle system that was actually involved in that you had timed hits in order to do more damage and you could block attacks the right timing as well. it kept the battles much more engaging. mix that with the battle interface, which instead of being list of different types of actions, and then a list of actions within the list of types of actions, different buttons on the controller were designated to different actions which made for much easier and quicker navigation. want to to a regular attack instead of a special move? use the A button. Special attack? Y button. Item? X button. I still have not found another RPG with as good a battle system as that game had. paper mario (they wanted to name it mario RPG 2) tried to do it, but it still didn't live up to the original.

For SNES, there's ZSNES or SNES9x GTK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=595007).
For the N64, the only choice seems to be Mupen64.

SNES9x is my favorite SNES emulator, but ZSNES has netplay capability. for linux, get SNES9x +GTK and OpenGL. for windows/wine, look up http://znet.byethost13.com/install.html. this is a client that will help you locate online matches for snes.
i haven't used n64 on linux yet, but for windows i used project64, which worked pretty
on topic of must-play games, i'm gonna add in StarFox2 for the SNES simply for the fact that it was never released. nothing quite like playing a game you were never supposed to see. i would also recommend looking for the english-text patch. if you play on expert, you will recognize one of the bosses from StarFox, and Andross will, well i'll let you find out on your own. points of awesomeness:

My emulators are basically the same as above. zsnes give me no problems and I don't even netplay. I've been trying out all kinds of n64 emulators trying to get one that works for everything but mupen is the only one that I can get to work natively in linux. I can run 1964 with wine but it locks up when I try to set my controller config. Most of the others I've tried with wine don't work.
There is, however, another called nestopia. If you can compile the source code (which I keep getting errors doing) you can run that natively:

I'll Give you some that work in Linux emulators:
Super Mario 64 (Mupen64)
Banjo-Kazooie (Mupen64)
Super Mario World (Zsnes)
Mario Kart 64 (Mupen64)
Super Mario RPG (Zsnes)
Paper Mario (Mupen64)
Here's some that don't work too well in Linux, and my recomended windows emulator:
Banjo-Tooie (See Below)
Goldeneye (Project 64)
Zelda: Ocarnia of Time (Project 64)
Recomended setup for Banjo-Tooie (Freezes sometimes with other setups, this one works good for me):
1964 0.8.5
Mupens Rsp
Schibo's Audio based on Uhle
Jabo's Direct3d 1.6
Jabos Input Plugin
To assemble this, download 1964 0.8.5 + 0.9.9 - Project64 1.6 - mupen, take the 1964 0.8.5 and put it in a folder of your choosing, "theif" the schiboaud.dll from 0.9.9 and add to your 0.8.5 folder.
"Theif" the jabo plugins from project64 1.6, and mupens rsp.dll file from mupen (rename it to rsp.dll) and enable in 1964 0.8.5
the reason I say use mupens rsp is because the game won't boot without it, and the pj64 rsp could be to blame for the crashes, i don't take no chances as I do not know, so I use mupens rsp plugin.
1964 0.9.9 would be fine but it has collison problems with the fire egg switch, as far as I know 0.8.5 has no issues with this rom. Jabos 1.6 video plugin supports all of the framebuffer effects as well (just a bit funny on the jigsaw puzzles that open the worlds, but thats ignorable).
Use schibo's audio because it seems to function in perfect harmony with mupens rsp, the audio sounds perfect and completely in sync and above all else is stable.
And finally of course enable speed sync.
-- Below is optional --
You can even boost the performance of BT by changing the counter factor to 1 in my setup (yeah i tested
Got that from www.banjotooiefaq.co.uk
Have fun :)

Thanks for the heads-up about Nestopia, but I can't seem to complete make-install. Make completes just fine, with no errors, but I'm getting the error message -
No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.
I've had this error before when I tried to compile sdlmame v0.123 for PCLinuxOS, and I have no idea what's causing it. There certainly seems to be a makefile present - do I need to edit that somehow? I'm not experienced at all when it comes to compiling software from source (though I did know I had to get the libraries it needed) so your help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Chrono Trigger - there are versions for SNES and Playstation. The Playstation has extra FMVs, but the games are the same, with faster loading times on the SNES version, so I prefer playing it on ZSNES.
On the Playstation: Alundra and Wild Arms (both old and very underrated), Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross and Tales of Phantasia (haven't tried the other Tales games yet...).
All RPGs of some description and all played on pSX Emulator, of course.
... Final Fantasy 9-RPG-ePSXe...
LOL! You'll find this game plays so much better on pSX (http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/) - no slowdowns, no glitches etc, and pSX is much easier to install and configure than ePSXe - pluginless, too. ;)

For the OP
Here are some must of the things I always come back and play, trying to name some stuff others might have not.
Mind you I have some of these on the Wii VC now.
Old school arcade:
Pac-man, Frogger, Elevator action, Tempest, Centipede, Dig-dug, Mr Do.
Old-school but not as old school arcade: (16bit'ish era)
TMNT, Black Tiger, Knights of the Round, Trojan, Gauntlet.
SNES:
Cybernator, Yoshi's Island, E.V.O.
Also, if you like shooters (the space kind, not the bald space marine kind) Check out the P.C. Engine it's chock full of excellent ones.

This is great - I'm definitely going to download Zelda: Ocarina of Time this weekend and check it out.
Personally, my hands down, all time favourite emulator game, that I play biennially, is Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan). It has better plot lines and characters than most fantasy movies or books. The gameplay is terrific, with hours of extra play, but no "impossible" hidden bosses like the weapons from FFVII.
Honorable mention to Little Nemo, Dream Master for the NES, which may just be a nostalgia thing, but has pretty fun gameplay.

Thank god someone mentioned the Commodore 64.
VICE - The Versatile Commodore Emulator - is the emulator to use - it's in the repos. You'll need to get the BASIC OS ROMs too, but they can be easily found. CCS64 for Windows may work via WINE too. CCS produces better sound output (in Windows anyway)
C64 Must Play Games
Wizball - the best music evar! Also happens to be one of the most original games ever made and one of the first I can remember that used physics and color in such an original way.
IK+ - International Karate Plus - really simple controls, smooth gameplay but hard to master (also play the Amiga version for better gfx/sound - same gameplay)
Delta - old school shooter with great music, powerups and better gameplay
Quedex - one of the later C64 games and a very original twitch puzzler (think neverball but much more clever and addicting gameplay)
Parallax - trippy 'rescue the scientists' top down shooter with added puzzle elements
The Last Ninja series - simple arcade adventure with rpg undertones - help Armakuni 'the last ninja' avenge the murder of his clan and family by the evil Shogun Warlord Kunitoki - it's very addictive. - http://lastninja.lemon64.com/ (The Last Ninja Archive) explains it in lots of detail including flash animations, games and even some previews of LN4 which was meant for PC and XBOX but never released.
Usagi Yojimbo - Arcade fighter (a la Streets of Rage but much simpler controls) with RPG aspects. You play the Rabbit Ronin Usagi Yojimbo (yeah the Samurai Rabbit from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series) on a quest for vengeance and personal enlightenment - how you play determines how the game ends as who and what you attack or give grace to and how plays out on your Karma - sounds dull but it's really cool.
http://www.lemon64.com/ has lots more including reviews etc. No ROMs though, but again, they're all easily found.

That's how I got mine too, lol. Back then it was called the "Nintendo Fun Club" but they quickly gave up on the idea of it being any more than a magazine. I can remember reading about games I never got the chance to play till now.
I forgot all about Blaster Master and whole host of other good games. Probably because I had only rented it back in the day.
I also thought that I had been the only one to play crazy games like "A Boy and His Blob" or "Conquest of the Crystal Palace". I hadn't actually discovered "Anticipation" until a few years later when one of my friends would host games. I remember Nintendo Power classifying it as an 'adult' video game. I guess that means something different now.

I'm so glad this was brought up.
Cave Story is an indie game (independent game). There isn't a linux client from what I've seen but the installer and English language patch work great with wine. I have a problem with fullscreen where it crops off center. I think it's an svga problem that happens with certain fullscreen apps.
In any case if you love 8 or 16 bit games you simply must play this. If you ask me, I think this is the future of not just linux gaming, but gaming in general - people making games not to fulfill some sales or profit goal, but for the love of the medium.
A good site for indie games is http://www.indiegames.com/
Some like Gish and Darwinia have linux clients others are hit and miss with wine. Worth a try since the hits are phenomenal. If you like pixel art check out Derek Yu's games. Eternal Daughter works alright but I have problems getting I'm OK to display.

If there was a WORKING saturn emulator for Linux (I know, they are getting CLOSE), you should definitely play Nights into Dreams.
This little classic from Sonic Team is impossible to describe, but I will try.
Mainly a 3D arcade flight sim, but on a 2D plane, and you are flying harlequin(?!). Massive combos (links) give you high scores, which you need to get high rankings (A/B/C/D).
Brilliant graphics and music (except graphics on emulators suck - to increase framerates). Still trying to A-rank my last level (after 2 years) to enable multiplayer...
PS. I downloaded my CD image, so you may still find it on P2P somewhere...

Haha. Just been watching some of the runthroughs on youtube. Ive watched 3 levels and cant stop laughing!
Also, some games:
NES:
Seiken Densetu 3 (there are english translations out there, its the Japanese sequel to Seiken Densetu 2 which is also known as Secret of Mana, also a great game!)
SNES:
International Superstar Soccer Deluxe (those of you playing PES now should try to remember that this is where it all started!)
Super Mario Kart (duh!)
Gameboy:
Mystic Quest (also known as Final Fantasy Adventure and it was also the first Seiken Densetu, was my first ever RPG on the gameboy. took me about 6 months of figuring out the "figure of 8" thing and when i did it I was sure id tried it before but couldnt have done. Duh! Meant I was MAJORLY levelled up though!)
Qix (always loved this game... in between mystic quest sessions! believe you can get it on nes too, but this is the one i grew up with!)
Master System (my console of choice!):
Pacmania (used to love the music in that!)
Alex the Kidd in Miracle World (who could forget him! but dont even THINK about trying the other Alex games... theyre awful!)
California Games (aah the summers here!)
Operation Wolf
The Ninja
Prince Of Persia
TRANSBOT (the daddy of all games. how many games do you know put the cheats in the manual? its that cool! all hail transbot as your overlord!)
Any Sonic Game (Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos although ignore sonic spinball as im sure its exactly the same as on mega drive but worse graphics)
Mega Drive:
Golden Axe
Any Sonic Game (Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, Knuckles Chaotix (32X))
That should keep you all amused for a bit!

Getting hold of good, used copies of Final Fantasy VII isn't difficult, but new, sealed copies of the game go for silly money. Try Amazon or ebay if you don't have a local dealer selling used games.
You do need to be careful, though: for some reason the Playstation native Final Fantasy games (i.e. VII, VIII and IX) are very sensitive to surface damage. My original copies of VIII and IX were very slightly scuffed; far less so than many other games I have that play perfectly, but neither would play or rip properly. Buying new copies solved that - I bought my copy of Final Fantasy VII new, fortunately, before the prices shot up.
But if you buy an 'as new' copy from a reputable dealer, you should be fine. And it is a game worth playing.
