It doesn't animate for me. I'm using FF 2.0.0.12.
I didn't even know pngs could be animated. Can you provide it as a gif instead?

Sure they can. It's a new format (APNG), but it requires new image viewers like Firefox 3 (which is probably why it won't animate for you). Older viewers will just display the first frame as a standard png.

So much for MNG, which was supposed to be the PNG animation standard. APNG, eh?
Okay, so it looks like Firefox 3 Beta 3 runs it, as does KSquirrel, Opera and XnView. Which basically means that I'm not going to do anything to get this running. Because I am lazy. I'll look this over when Firefox 3 is out of Beta (in 2012, aka the end of the World).

But the extension of the file is filename.png.jpeg :S

In that particular instance, I believe we may be dealing with a .JPEG. I honestly didn't even pay attention to it at all.
Honestly, APNG/MNG/Moving PNGs of any sort seem a pointless waste to me since you can do it better, more compatable and probably smaller in file size with Flash or Silverlight (although I shudder to admit that Silverlight is already quickly becoming a viable alternative).

I am in Firefox 3.0 beta 3 and I can see the animation. It looks pretty cool!

On the other hand, just think animated desktop icons for Linux - yeah!

Thanks, its a bit juddery and out of alignment but its my first go.
Never been able to make a mng :confused:
@ spider, flash is pointless when quick loading time is what your after and beside ff seams to have problems installing flash

Firefox doesn't have the problem, Adobe does, actually.
MNG was a poorly supported format that never gained enough traction. A few obsolete programs can do minor things with it, but nobody ever bothered to give it any real support.
I suppose animated desktop icons and faster load times are a bonus, but I'm one of those wacky designers that hates using animation of any sort.

in any way, PNG has better image quality than GIF.. If they could make it animated it would be great, but again, not everyone can see it, and it will be compatibility issue. Though it's a good start!

I hope people dont start going crazy with APNG like they did with GIFs back in the day. Also, they probably need a lot more CPU power than GIFs.

I honestly fail to see the point of using apng at this moment, its kool that its there, however, if about 99.999% of the users cant see it yet, whats the point?
i myself am a web designer and in order for my web sites to work the way I like them to (fast to load and 100% cross-major-browser checked), I stick with gif&jpg, rarely using png, I noticed that it is wiser to use extra couple lines of code and make it so the jppg would be in that perfect spot, where u need the shadow/gradient/glow, that u would use png for.
png is so much heavier...
300px by 300px img in Photoshop, only applied filter->render->clouds.
png: 26.47k
jpg(@100quality): 19.47k
oh Lord, why would u use png?

Portable Network Graphics are Lossless.
Jpeg is Lossy.
PNG can be compressed and maintain its appearance.
Jpeg cannot.
PNG is a superior format and considering that we aren't living in the '90s any longer, a majority of internet users have switched to high speed connections that can handle the extra bits.
Using its alpha masking features are far better than using gif which limits your palette.
Not to mention that just about every icon on your Linux desktop is a PNG.

They're either PNG or SVG, wich is also awesome ;-)

That's the most anticipated feature of Firefox 3 for me. I can finally use SVG in web development and even though IE users won't be able to see them... I can live with that. :lolflag:
Seriously though. SMIL is going to be a major plus for Firefox and with them switching to Cairo for rendering, fonts are smother and page scaling is awesome.
