Thinking of giving LFS a bash just so I can learn more about Linux itself. Just wondered if you guys found it usefull to your general Linux knowledge or just a waste of compile/download time?!

I personally cannot say anything on this matter, however I do think there might be better ones out there for the hard edge user.
Slackware and Gentoo might be a better bet if you ask me, especially slack as I have used it off and on... its good if you want to have a more hands on approach.

Gentoo is a little harder, but it comes on a live CD, so it wasn't that hard to get going. I am now up to date, which I say is a little easier once you know the commands. I already have Firefox 2.0.0.12 from the portage tree, and it doesn't look like Ubuntu has put it in the repos yet. If you want to learn about terminal than give Gentoo a shot. Although I am not in the terminal that much.
It doesn't come with an add/remove program so unless you know the name of the program you are looking for, you have to search. In closing Gentoo has been pleasant and I am getting the hang of it quick.

It took me about 5 hours to get it installed, everything compiling from source. But it is a nice system.

As far as i know you can install Gentoo from Stage 1 - that is, compile everything. Maybe it's pretty close to LFS?
Thx, but Stage 3 Gentoo seems just about hard enough! ;)

If you can get LFS running you will learn a lot more about Linux then installing Gentoo which teaches you basically how to install Gentoo.
LFS is a pain and a lot of trouble but if you really want to learn it all then its a good thing
