i personally don't care for the default color scheme or background, but it's a simple matter of changing the appearance settings.

In before flame war, and subsequent move to recurring discussions.
But as to your comment, it is the color that the artists and those in charge want it to be. If you want it a different color, 20 seconds of work can change that. Personally I hate the way the brown is implemented, but even if I liked the default I'd change it, so I really don't care.

If you have a problem with it you can either:
a) use a different distibution
b) change the theme
I don't know many people who keep the default theme or keep the same theme for more than a month on that note.

One point of linux is to make it yours. My Ubuntu Gutsy looks almost as its own distro. The basic theme I could live with however.

I really like the human theme of ubuntu.I believe that the color gives ubuntu its exclusivity

Yes and no. It's nice that it's unique from all the other "hey let'sg o blue" distros, but then I think blue/green is a lot more pleasing to the eye naturally than oranges.
The brown is fine, it's the orange I don't really like.

I think i'm probably in the minority here but I quite like the brown.
I used emerald for a while but after having to use vista for a bit I really grew sick of the whole transparency thing and I find the default brown rather calming and understated - I sincerely hope that ubuntu doesn't decide to adopt a garish colour scheme like Vista or OS X.

Too Orange! I personnally like brown, and the only reason I'm not using the hardy theme is because I like black better!

be serious people, the ubuntu theme/ human is the only decent theme out of the box from all os-es, vista theme is cool only on xp :)

I like brown, though I prefer the more wood-like, darker, low saturation variant, and do not really fancy the more orange variant in the default theme.
But as people before me already has stated: don't like it? don't keep it, changing the looks of linux in general is easier than in both osx ani windows,
and this color has somewhat become a trademark for ubuntu and is good for the recognisability if that's a word.
How many of you keep the default wallpaper anyway?

Personally I like the brown color, quiet relaxing for the eyes.
But I change the theme to my personal setup (regarding which distro it is).
It only takes a click or two to change the theme, so I say big deal ;)

I think the brown color is a faux trademark of Ubuntu, and for that reason I think the color should be kept.
Having said that, it doesn't matter how easy you can switch the theme, no downloadable theme will ever be as widely associated with Ubuntu as the default theme is. If the theme looks old and unexciting, I think that impression will carry over to new potential users.
A lot of people are trying to make their operating system look like OS-X or Vista, but how many people are trying to make their operating system look like Ubuntu?
