I know that many Ubuntu user's would like to see improvements in the artwork for Hardy. As I see things, the artwork for Hardy will be very conservative. Why not ask for something obtainable?
Here is a suggestion for a wallpaper. (The one with no logo.)
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ubuntu+glass?content=66701
With a couple of modifications this could be the GDM theme.
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ubuntu-Orange+GDM+Theme?content=68092
The changes to the GDM theme would be to make it with the wallpaper without the logo, replace the Gnome planter with a Ubuntu logo, and change the text from Gnome Desktop to Ubuntu.
I put together the GDM theme and have made another one with the changes I have described.
William Tax did a nice job with the wallpaper. The design has a look that fits with the style of gnome. The colors used look good with the current default Ubuntu theme and icons. The design is clean and not overdone. The wallpaper and modified GDM theme is appropriate for home or business settings.
The number of downloads demonstrates that the artwork has been well received. I am using William Tax's wallpaper on my Hardy test system along with the modified GDM theme and I think the developer's might consider this conservative approach.
This would solve the brown problem and these two minor changes make a big difference in the appearance. Please post your thoughts, good or bad.

I like where that's headed...the "glass" logo needs some clean up and there's something about the top left quadrant of that image that bugs me..still it was time for a change so I set it as my wallpaper.

Here is a modified version of the GDM Theme.
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=74917
I am suggesting that this GDM theme with the wallpaper without the logo might be considered for Hardy.
This would get rid of the brown look but not be such a drastic change that it may not be considered. The only other change that would be needed, would be to change the color in the OpenOffice splash and open-about from brown to orange.
Ubuntu is not my primary operating system but I would like Ubuntu user's to enjoy the look of Hardy. Do you think the developer's might be interested in the idea? William Tax would need to be contacted in order to submit the idea.

I REALLY like this. The glass logo thing needs to be touched up a little, but otherwise I think this is just perfect. =]

I think it's nice to have a lot of different artwork to choose from. That way there can be something for everyone. But I have to say don't like this - there's too much yellow and the colors seem very "un-ubuntu" to me.
As I started by saying, keep up the good work so the Ubuntu users will have something to choose from ;-)

MadsRH, thanks for your input and your honesty.
I figured the yellow and orange gave it a Ubuntu look because both colors are in the logo.
Thanks again for your thoughts on this.

I was thinking the same thing as MadsRH when I first saw the wallpaper. However, I have [mostly] transparent panels and the yellow actually helps the readability of the text and makes the icons stand out better. And really, it looks pretty good.
Great progress on the GDM them.
I think it's truly great how active this community is and how much energy and effort comes from the community to make this such and incredible operating system and a good user experience.
I do think that the brightness of the wallpaper (and therefore GDM theme) make it a little bit loud for the more conservative let's-try-to-please-everyone aesthetic the Ubuntu dev and artwork teams are going for. Even still, I think this is good stuff, and I hope to see more, if not here, then on gnome-look.org.

speedkreature, thanks for your comments! I was wondering about the brightness of the artwork too and appreciate your thoughts about it.
Currently the default wallpaper is dark and I wonder if the developer's would consider the brightness of the one I would like to propose as too drastic a change?
The wallpaper does show off the folder icons and toolbars well.
Anyone else have thoughts or ideas on this?

I sent an e-mail to William Tax asking him if he would consider submitting his work to the artwork site for consideration.

thta was really a fantastic effort by willy tax but to be frank It's just too flashy and too bright and believe me people can hardly work for a couple or two minutes in such kind of lights and color combination...Rest of all it's really a very good work and a great concept of glass like the one in vista....

Ok, what about something like this made from a wallpaper created by MadsRH?
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=75158
MadsRH? made a modified version of a default Gutsy wallpaper and made it into a real work of art!
Would something like this work better?

I thought it was a nice remake of the original artwork and it opens up options for other window decorations.because of MadsRH's choice of colors.
Any other opinions?

The concept is interesting. It does feel a bit harsh.
I understand the desire to stay with the traditional Ubuntu colors but there just aren't that many people who the colors in the brown to yellow portion of the spectrum. That, I think, is the biggest challenge.
I like the concept below quite a bit, but it does not have Ubuntu colors in it and I think to be truly Ubuntu-esque, it's going to need more than just a color logo.

Whatever direction this artwork goes, it needs to be versatile enough to allow for a user list with only a small modification
There's my 2 cents.

I have updated both GDM Themes. I removed the word "Linux" from the middle of the GDM themes, thanks to Crispy.
The GDM themes now have a cleaner more polished look to them.

I'm impressed by the "Sky" one... make it available will different colours and I'm sold. (Theme dependent)
Allow support for a list as well.
Dim the logo in the lower corner, attracts the eyes away from everything else.

Here is another GDM theme with artwork most everyone is familiar with.

Alejandro Arrizabalaga. is the author of the original theme. I wanted to try it with another style for a clean look.

This looks nice. A very simple design, but I still think there's too much yellow as I posted earlier.
Do you post your work at ubuntu-art.org as well???

Thanks for the comments. I thought the artwork had all of the elements of the Ubuntu logo incorporated into the design.
I have posted on ubuntu-art.org once but gnome-look seemed to be more frequented for people looking for artwork.

I refined the Ubuntu Glossy GDM theme today. I changed the Ubuntu text from black to white. I thought it looked better and goes better with the options color for a better overall look.

I LOVE the wallpaper, but I think the GDM theme should be left alone. The current one in Gutsy is AWESOME!

I just found an even better wallpaper: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Glossy+Ubuntu+wallpaper?content=66593
Try setting it as your wallpaper with completely transparent panels and it looks AWESOME.
