with its current code base that is because it's forking (http://www.linux.com/feature/126441)! Cinelerra is being completely rewritten and other than bug fixes, there will likely be no new updates to the current branch.
This is incredible news for Linux and video editing however. It sounds like we'll finally have an able bodied video editing suite.

Project is truly in very early and sensitive stage, but course is good. I especially appreciate "... focus on value instead of popularity".

Another fork ?
Maybe this will be the right one :)
The original is still crawling along apparently. Although I expect most of the action will indeed happen around the new (apparently nameless for now) version.
Maybe a proper video editor will appear one of these days after all (yay) :)

They decided to write a new video editor from scratch because their current one is beyond repair. You think that's good news?

We've had one for quite a while (http://www.blender.org/) now, but still (http://www.elephantsdream.org/) no one seems (http://peach.blender.org/) to notice (http://www.plumiferos.com/index-en.php).
Redoing Cinelerra from scratch will probably take years.

After checking out there new code base and reading their IRC minutes, I've lost a lot of enthusiasm in it already. They seem to be rather argumentative about the most mediocre things. Eye208 said it best I think. Blender can do amazing things when it comes to video editing. Some of the plugins for the sequence editor are just absolutely amazing.

I've heard that Blender can be good for movie making, but I couldn't find any tutorials explicitly regarding that. Can you link to one?

A linux video editor that has a sane GUI and is actually stable? About time! :guitar:
Cinelerra was too unusable and bloated anyways, I wish the community the best of luck!

Sweet, thanks.
Regarding Cinerella, I just noticed that the icon for the "unsharp" video filter is a picture of George Bush's head. :P
I wonder if they'll change that in the rewrite...
