I am making this simple poll to see if there are more KDE or GNOME users out there. KDE, or KDE 4, I don't care, it's all "KDE" ;)

Furthermore, I acknowledge the fact that a) some people may use XFCE, or something else, and b) some people may use more than one. If you don't use GNOME or KDE, put "Other". If you use more than one, choose the one you use most/like better.

Feel free to have a discussion about which you think is better and why. Remember that the DE and it's apps are seperate4 entities! I love most KDE apps, but prefer the GNOME DE...

I have used both Gnome, XFCE and KDE. I like all of them. I like the menus of Gnome, the simplicity and speed of XFCE and all the possibilities of KDE. I use XFCE now, but have lately been playing a little with KDE. A few silly things have kept me from giving it a fair shot before, like the default blue Windows-like look. However, a second panel with quicklaunchers and menu on the top, like in Gnome, was easily done by drag and drop. It consumes very little memory when used with KDE applications like amarok and K3b.

As to KDE apps in Gnome: In my experience, KDE apps tend to run a lot better in KDE than in Gnome. In Gnome I had quite a few crashes with KDE applications, but almost none in KDE. Secondly, if you run KDE applications in Gnome, you still have to load large KDE libraries, which will consume a lot of memory.

hands down gnome, followed by XFCE, because I like simplicity, but gnome gives me more functionality.
i also like XFCE a lot and if Xubuntu could give me some of the ease that gnome gives (like thunar having a network browser like nautilus), I would probably make XFCE my DE of choice.
I love XFCE for it's lightweight.

forgot to say that gnome needs to beautify a bit though.
menus without rounded corners are considered just ugghlly now!

I like Gnome. Partially because its the first one I used since "Explorer.exe". Gnome just seems more simple and functional.

I've tried all 3, and I like GNOME the best. Admittedly the KDE I tried was under SUSE (blechhkkk), but it was KDE nonetheless.
KDE is fat, ugly, and slow. Sure, plenty of options, actually too many, but I just function better in GNOME. GNOME takes all of 2 seconds to figure out, and KDE seems very awkward, like I'm using XP again... My heart cries, though, when Amarok takes up 60% of my CPU under CompizFuz when the GUI is up (less than 2% in Metacity, but still.) Amarok worked great under KDe+CF... *weeps*.
I love the XFCE approach. XFCE is excellent, just not very polished. The environment seems hectic (small menus, faded colors), and icons need some work. Again, this is all opinion.

KDE all the way. I don't really understand the "KDE has messy/confusing menus" argument, at least not today. It used to be pretty bad, but it's come a long way since those days. While an complete KDE install will put a ton of applications in the menu that most people will never use, must KDE based distro's have cut way down on the number of apps KDE comes with by default.

I don't entirely dislike Gnome, but every time I use it I feel as if I'm being denied thing. Simple configurations that I think I should have access to have been taken away from me, moving not only into the realm of being overly simple but also overly frustrating.

Plus, I think all the KDE apps are 10x better than their gnome counterparts.

Amarok, Kopete, K3B FTW!
