It's a good idea to connect Ubuntu with marxism, basic ideology and system of values are similar, but I don't think Stalin is so cute as penguin. :) At least he don't deserve any glorification.

You don't know what is communism, isn't it? In this case the best thing you can do is just shut up and listen what intelligent people talk about it.

There is no need to be rood. It's evidentially that Jan has deformed picture about marxism, but there is no need for conflict.

Idea is to value more community and humanity than profit... but in practice this usually was only a fairytale for exploitation of common people. :(

I grew up when the communist system was still in my country
and believe me
you have no idea what the reality in these days was
but that's the past
and art is free
and freedom of speech is a wonderful thing

This part of the story China felt in the worst possible scenario. It's good that is part of the past, and I hope it never be happen again.
Greetings to China

Calling China a communist country is just as questionable as calling the US a democracy.

I am afraid that this discussion will lead to heavy conflicts and misunderstandings
I am sorry for starting it
perhaps you are right, and we must let the past be the past and I have to learn to be a little more open for a humorous approach
peace and let's talk about the present and the future

How dare you all to start threads about communism?! I loath the idea of linking Ubuntu to one or all political movements. I don't want to know about your political motivations. Do you feel that communism is the right way to go? Good for you! Go tell all your local friends. See if they care. But please, for the sake of Ubuntu, stay away of the official forums here. Starting political topics may (and in my opinion: will) eventually be the end of open source. Politics has (and always will) destroy more than it has united. Perhaps you've forgotten what happened in Europe in the first half of the 20th century, but I haven't.

Hah! That's from an old propaganda poster, right?
I would actually do the following:
1. Remove the "All for the OS" tag. I think people will get Stalin+Ubuntu pretty easily.
2. Change the font on Ubuntu. Make it all one size, like on most ships...also, include the Russian designation of the ships (UK is HMS, US is USS).
3. Change the Flag to ORANGE, with a white logo.
4. Post it so we all can use it. :)

Ok latley i have been doing a serise of ubuntu pictures in the vain of communist propoganda. This was more for impact than a politcal statment. Now though the soveit union was not great to its people it had an amzing propoganda. From a purley articst critique it was great! I did inspire the people, and hopefully this will to. But i dont want ubuntu to be the lost leader the soviet union was. I wanna good art for good!

It's sad now our Ubuntu community easily fall in fire...
Still I think communist posters done by c:/dos are interesting. There are very provocative, force us to think about Ubuntu, community, FOSS (free and open source software) and world around us. But I think this kind of propaganda must stay inside of our community.

Exactly.
So far every attempt to create a truly communist society has failed. That doesn't mean communism is an evil idea. It just means that the idea doesn't work in the real world, with real people.
"Star Trek", a popular American television series, has been promoting communist ideas for decades. On the other hand, if you look at works of dystopian fiction written by Western authors, it's mostly about capitalism gone out of control one way or the other.
Associating Linux with Marx is not entirely off base, but associating it with Stalin is, because Stalin was not a communist in the Marxist sense. Neither was Mao.

this is true but he is a strong symbol and that is why he was used!
