Which is the most popular solution?

Probably VMWare. But Virtualbox and QEMU are very good as well.
For QEMU, you need to find a good tutorial on the command line options or download a GUI.
VMWare and Virtualbox both have a similar interface.
I've read people saying QEMU is the fastest out of the three. I found QEMU and Virtualbox faster then VMWare but between those two, I don't notice any difference.
I've never used XEN so I can't comment on that.

I have only used VirtualBox, but I've found it quite easy to setup and use and it has worked flawlessly.
I just setup 'seamless' mode with an XP Pro VM on an Ubuntu 7.10 host - very nice. Just wrote up the instructions in this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4258327&postcount=3).
