My questions is how bad will some of these hurt your machine compared to what they sound like look at the link below all that start with linux take a look are these really a threat like SOPHOS would have you believe??

Does it list any Linux virus? I only see worms that use old vulnerabilities, just use your update manager and you are fine. With ubuntu's closed ports policy, they cannot really use those worms against you btw. And they first would need to know you are using Linux, it is hard to know so (in comparison to finding out your windows version)

So you thought GNU/Linux was 100% secure?
How naive.. ;-)

the link below is a trojan I mean what are the odds of getting these though and will they work?

I am yet to find one for which the odds are over 0.0 .
They are very old, which means you don't even need to update your system.
And well, trojans are a non-issue, really. In order for them to use root access you would need to manually install them. If you are afraid of trojans just look for information on the web before installing a program. Just notice that none of these things is really an issue at all, most of them were created to target specific people, not to target the general public.

The virus damage would be limited to owned directories and/or files. Any folder needing root access would be saved, such as your system folders....
Unlike Windows, where, for the most part, all folders are accessable, Linux does not have this vulnerbility.

a good point even if your hacked it only goes to a point with trojans another smart move for linux

It is not like that.
If the vulnerable program is executed with root access these worms would be able to take over your machine. But this is only true for worms (And really, as long as you update often you are fine, these root vulnerabilities are rare anyways)
trojans on the other really can't do much (and I am yet to see linux trojans in real life...)
You can still achieve piece of mind, just the fact that I know inserting a USB disk to my computer is 100% not going to install some virus on it, brings me peace (Here it is very frequent to find windows viruses like that and it takes too much time to clean them)

at least for me in order to view my more important files on my computer you need the administration password so if they did have access to my computer they still wouldn't get anything valuable.

As far as Windows malware goes, the majority of it in the wild at the moment is written for financial gain (keylogging, getting you to buy fake security programs, delivering spam, delivering ads) and due to the very small numbers of desktop Linux users it just isn't worth it. So we're still pretty safe at least for the time being but obviously it doesn't hurt to use your common sense when on the Internet, I never got a virus in years of using Windows and whilst I did have my security programs my antivirus never caught anything. I'd hate to have to start running an antivirus on Ubuntu though :(

trojans on the other really can't do much (and I am yet to see linux trojans in real life...) While I agree that we've yet to see Linux trojans in real life, they can do much if they take the form of a .deb file.
Trick (trojans use social engineering, after all) a user into downloading and double-clicking a malicious .deb file, and gDebi will take care of the rest. That user got tricked into allowing a program root access, and the bottom line is that user is the security hole in social engineering and thus makes the security structure/policy moot.
