I want to totally switch over to Ubuntu but still need to run some Windows apps - VMWare seems the best approach, but in searching around for How-To's, it seems like they are not current.
So - I would like to see a current How-To on installing VMWare with as little, or no, use of the command line. Basically I am asking for an "Idiot Install Guide".

I don't think I'm much at creating HOW-TOs, but I can get you started with VMware Server.
Open Synaptic, click on Settings, and then Repositories and then, Third-Party Software. Check the partner item of canonical. Close.
Search on the word: vmware. Check on vmware-server. Apply, apply. It is installed.
Tell us what happened and where you are.

OK - During the install, it asks for a serial number and I did have one but it did not accept it. It sat there for a while and finally I powered off.
Booted up and VMWare was installed. I then ran it, set up a virtual disk, and then tried to power it up and got this msg:
"Unable to change virtual machine power state: the process exited with an error."
What next? I want to install Windows XP Pro.

This is not a good thing. Where did you get the license number? And did you enter it correctly?
It's Super Bowl Sunday and going to big party, so will not be around much.
