This isn't the regular Puppy vs. DSL. I'm wondering which one is better for a full install, not just a liveCD.
I'm looking for easy to configure and install new apps, mostly.
Opinions?

Why not install something such as Ubuntu minimal and use tha to build upon and add your own stuff? Also, I would say Puppy is easier imo, but I don't have as much experience with DSL.

dsl with a regular hd install, you get old stable debian, so you can use old stable repos, that's thousands of packages a apt-get or synaptic away.
puppy there's no difference, you only get what there is.
i might be a bit biased though i'm dsl all the way, puppy has always screwed up on me. dsl has saved my bacon countless times, it's the perfect rescue cd, i've run dsl in ram for over 6 months on systems where hd's have died and it just never faulters, it runs as good as the day you first started it, no matter how long you run it.

With puppy now, you get what is there plus all of the .pet packages, plus slackware packages, PLUS other package formats which are only an alien away.

btw, slackware packages will always work, as will .pet files (puppy's format). The slackware packages opens up a field of oppertunity to use packages from ie Zenwalk on Puppy easily.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd also go with DSL. I don't like the security in Puppy (or lack of security) and I've found drive mounting to be a pain in the ****. It's incredibly straight-forward in DSL, and very stable.
But if you have the hardware to run Puppy, I'd suggest going with TinyMe. I got a chance to play with it on the weekend, and it's an absolutely fabulous, simple, and beautiful distro. Synaptic is a bit sluggish, but that's my only beef about it.

I had DSL installed on the hard drive of an old laptop and it was terrible i couldn't get anything outside the repo to install and half the stuff in the repo didn't work.
I would go with Puppy for sure given those two.

Can you do a normal install of DSL then? I know you can do a "Frugal" and the normal ability is there, but not recommended by the authors for some reason that i can't remember. :)
DSL is fast, and so light it's incredible. Does it use the current Debian repos?

True enough, but it's VERY fast & highly configurable. I find it hard to choose between them myself. :)

Looks like they're using JWM on default instead of Fluxbox. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'll download myself a copy too :)

yes, the jwm is default now, but fluxbox is still there to.

yes, should be no problem.
the only thing not working for me was sound, i'll look into that later, i only played with it for about a hour, then my eye's got to watery and i climbed back into bed, damed cold, i just can't beat it.

Sorry to hear about your cold Kerry.... hope that it goes real soon.
Just been trying DSL in Virtualbox.... it's good. Nice & fast and really well put together. Definitely one to burn & use for when you need a Live CD that doesn't take forever to boot! :)

i've had the cold for 2 weeks now, the doc just gave me antibiotics and sent me on my way, the problem is it just keeps raining and i got to walk my dogs. lol, i got 4 blankets, a dozen cans of cream of tomato, went through the nyqual and i'm taking comtrex now, 1 way or another i'm fighting it tooth and nail. lol
yeah, it surprised me to, i didn't know there had been so many changes, the last time i used it, it didn't have the icons on the bar and the other icons looked like crap, so i suggested it to robert. i really need to get me a new burner so i can keep up with these things.
:lolflag:
take care
