View Full Version : Sword on Ubuntu

I was pleasantly surprised to find various Sword modules packaged in the main Ubuntu 7.04 distro, and I ended up choosing GnomeSword2 to display them.

There are not as many packages of Sword modules as compared to what we have in use with the Windows version of Sword. Thus questions:

1) Are there more modules packaged for Sword if we enable some Ubuntu CE repository?

2) If not, anyone interested in packaging more modules? Anyone willing to teach me how to package them? Since the modules do not change very much, I would be willing to become a maintainer if it means that.

3) I assume that what I found in the normal Ubuntu 7.04 was "spill over" from the CE edition, correct? There are not separate packages between the mainstream and CE editions, are there?

I think enough for a first post in the Ubuntu CE group! ;-)

Michael

1) Are there more modules packaged for Sword if we enable some Ubuntu CE repository?

a) Some material for Sword Project front ends can only be distributed from their site;

b) Do not confuse e-Sword with The Sword Project. These are two very different projects, with very little interaction. their resources are not compatible, and for licensing reasons can not be converted into the format that the other project uses.

2) If not, anyone interested in packaging more modules?

a) If you do do that, pay attention to the copyright and EULA for each resource;

b) The Sword Project front ends should have a utility that directly installs resources from the official Sword Project repository;

Ubuntu Christian Edition is built on Ubuntu. Some packages in Ubuntu were modified for Ubuntu Christian Edition. Other "standard" Ubuntu packages were dropped. As a general rule, Synapatic Package Manager will install anything from Ubuntu, or Ubuntu Christian Edition without any issues.

By golly so it does! Looks like I can install the remaining modules via that method.

Thank you so much!

I don't have the URL, but there are two or three other publicly available repositories of Sword Project material that can be added to the list that is checked. (You'll have to search the Sword Project list archives for them.)
