The idea of this thread is to take a usually complex computer term and create an analogy for it that joe average user would relate to. I think that if we can develop analogies like these, it makes explaining computers (and hopefully Linux!) to our peers a lot easier. I'm getting quite good at this now, especially when trying to explain to family why the wireless network went down again, etc.
My turn:
"What's a file format?"
Answer: Imagine your car's the file, in a much stricter road system, where you can't just use any car on any road. To get it to run, you need the road to be the right one for the wheels. If you have the right road, your car will run. If you have the wrong road, it won't run. The file format is simply the equivalent of the type of car you have.
