View Full Version : Possible Ubuntulite-RULE project merger

This is probably a very esoteric discussion, but the managers of the Ubuntulite and RULE projects are discussing combining efforts.

Ubuntulite, if you didn't know already, hopes to use Ubuntu as an option for out-of-date hardware (sub-200Mhz is the target machine), with Openbox as the window manager. More about that here (http://ubuntulite.tuxfamily.org).

The RULE (Run Up-to-date Linux Everywhere) has the same goal, but seems to prefer Fedora Core and KDE (I'll admit my ignorance on the inner workings of RULE). More on that here (http://www.rule-project.org/).

It's probably only of very oblique interest, but if you're someone who regularly works with pre-Pentium 4 equipment, you might be interested in how that shapes up.

Both communities are asking for comment now. On the Ubuntulite side of the house you can read the discussion between developers (managers?) here (http://ubuntulite.tuxfamily.org/?q=node/69), and comment here (http://ubuntulite.tuxfamily.org/?q=node/68).

Ah, yes. If you've done a minimal install either from the mini-iso or from an alternate CD, you can run the script and it should install more or less automatically. If you run into problems leave a note on the UL forums and Shae should be able to answer. ;)

what are the differences between installing ubuntulite and doing apt-get install openbox, after a minimal install?

Not a lot, except the metapackage includes an array of software specific to Ubuntulite. There are also some backports for Dapper, and a couple of packages compiled specifically for Ubuntulite (the newer version of Kazehakase for Feisty, for example).

It still needs some testing and some feedback, so if you have advice for the manager(s), let them know. :)

i'll probably give it a try in virtualbox. i just did a min.install with openbox and was pretty happy with it, but i'll definitely give this a look.

anyone with 128 RAM or less, should definitely think about ubuntulite or minimal install with openbox or even fluxbox.
