I run a the rig below, it does okay with quite a few games, but should I even bother trying with Doom 3?

Celeron D 3.06@3.2 (Prescott core, benches comparable to a Northwood PIV at the same clock)
2x512 DDR333
GeForce FX5200 (128bit bus)
Sound Blaster Live 5.1 (Alsa)
i686 Kernel

I'm not looking for 99fps, maybe just say a steady 30+ at 640x480 medium detail? Would love 800x600 but I am not that optimisitic. What do you guys think?

I played Doom 3, in Windows, on a Athlon XP 2K and 512 mbs ram and a GeForce 4 MX400 64mbs. I haven't tried it in Linux yet, just got my box working again in Ubuntu, with my new FX 5200 128mbs so I don't know how well it would run. I don't see you having any problems with what you are working with.

Yes, sir. With that rig you should be able to play @ 640x480 and medium quite well. Your system was pretty close to mine, and sometimes I bumped it up to 800x600.

I would bet you would average right around ~27fps. At worst, on heavy levels it would crawl to ~22fps (but that was rare). Which is pretty good, and what I played at for both D3 and ROE...

Sounds promising, what are you running for hardware Skoal?

P4-1.7 GiggleHertz, Nvidia Ti-4600, 776 MB, and SB Live!

You having a surround sound card alone is worth the price of admission, if you ask me. Just don't trust little voices in the Game saying, "over here...over here..."

Or maybe you should. I dunno.

muahahah...

Bob_c_b,

if you can (and if there is a linux demo) have a shot at the demo. I say this because I guess the Ti4600 has better performance than a FX5200 (even if it is a newer generation).

As a similar example, my ATi Mobility 9600 Pro IS better than the mobility X300 (although I don't enjoy DX9.0c shaders in winblows).

I had the same hardware, but if you really want to enjoy it, get a better graphics card. Consider the 6800 gt, or the Fx 5600...

I tried the demo last night, it ran suprisingly well overall but to get steady frames I had to fall back to 640x480@medium. I plan to dump this card soon, it is a temporary solution for my Ti4200 that finally died, I'm trying to find an FX5900xt for a good price then this thing is out of here.

A 6200 AGP for ~$50 might be a good sol'n. Here's some benchmarks:

I dunno which of those in there are PCIX or AGP though. It looks like the Tom's Hardware one is AGP.
