Synaptic Smart Update

The last time that I installed updates through the built-in update alert mechanism, I got a notice that some updates could not be installed and that I should use the "Smart Update" function in Synaptic. I've looked through Synaptic and could see anything that referenced "Smart Update." Am I missing something? Thanks for your help.

(In Synaptic) click the "Mark all upgrade" button and select smart upgrade. Then press Apply.
