I've seen lots of information about how to install photoshop in wine if you have an existing windows installation but I installed ubuntu after windws went belly up so lost all data.
Is there a howto for CS2 in wine without a windows install?

Check here

Please note that wine-0.9.54 or later is needed to use Photoshop CS2

Wow that was simple! Just like in windows, however I did run into one issue. In windows you click the setup.exe in the unzipped folder but in Wine you have to first open the Photoshop CS2 sub-folder, one under the usual setup.exe. There's another setup.exe in there which installed the trial version just fine.
I thought I'd test it first in a VM at work. So even under Vista with Ubuntu in Virtual box through wine it still runs pretty well. I expect even better performance when installing straight on my ubuntu laptop.
Thanks again.

Yes, you are absolutely correct! I probably should have mentioned that in my initial post... Hopefully that minor quirk didn't set you back too much! ;)
Performance wise, it seems to run fairly quick... I haven't played around with it too extensively yet, but from what I've seen thus far, it seems to me to stack up pretty evenly against a comparable Windows instance.
Glad you were able to get everything figured out and working.

About 15 seconds of Google time I'll never get back.. but I can forgive you that :)

Why does it say: Never use a cracked version of photoshop?
Is it because thy are trying to be legal or is there somthing that won't work if you have a cracked one?
Lets face it, 95% of al users that have photoshop have a pirated version.

I don't know why, but if you're thinking of pirating the software you can always use the Gimp and stay legal. I wrote a set of comparison tutorials for gimp and Photoshop . You can read them at http://goingmanual.com so please consider this before joining the ranks of the pirates. Gimp is great for photo touch ups. I don't think it's quite there for web site or print design but it is improving all the time.

I've been using photoshop for over 3 years, and gimp for about 8 months. I really need photoshop.

Because stealing is still stealing even if everyone does it. If you can't afford to pay the full price of Photoshop and Cinepaint doesn't meet your needs, find a version on e-bay.
Cinepaint, GIMP, and Krita are free alternatives (though GIMP is useless for anything but low end images and Krita will only handle 16bpp).
Pixel is a commercial alternative that is currently available for $30(US) but has a very slow development pace.
PS 7 is selling for around $50(US) with CS2 going around $200(US) (http://search.ebay.com/photoshop-cs2_W0QQfrppZ50QQfsopZ1QQmaxrecordsreturnedZ300) on e-bay, if you can't afford that then I suggest you learn to live within your means.

PS7 is enough of a program for most people and at $50 bucks you can't go wrong. Watch out for the ebayers though you could well end up buying a cracked version at near retail.
Why do you say Gimp is only good for low end images? I use a Rebel XT 8Mp Canon DSLR and have processed many images with Gimp. Some of them are on my website simonandrews.net (http://simonandrews.net)
Can you tell which ones were gimp processed?
