I have a question about video settings. First, a thread...

I just followed the following thread to upgrade video settings -- prior to doing so any advanced graphics game like Chromium ran very slowly. Now, apps like Chromium work beautifully, but desktop navigation is very slow and clunky. Also, typing is very slow -- it takes about half a second for a typed character to appear (but typed characters are stored in the buffer). I'm running an ATI x800 graphics card and I'm using KDE desktop environment. I tried going back to Gnome but the slowness didn't go away. I believe I'm running Gutsy, but to be honest I'm not sure and it takes so long to get to the screen to check that I haven't been able to do so.
Any suggestions?
