Ok.. I've added the medibuntu repositories, installed libdvdcss2 and have the libdvdread packages.. I still can't get DVDRIP to work with DVD's.. What am I missing? I also have the w64codecs

Not all dvd's will work, some have other copy protections, dvd's from Disney are an example. Can you play the Dvd in an application like mplayer? w64codecs shouldnt make any difference.

Ok.. just so happens that the first two discs I tried didn't work. I got the incredibles to play (albeit very choppy) and dvdrip seems to be ripping the vobs on this one

It's unfortunate this this isn't working better in linux these days

Do you want to make a full back-up, or convert it to some other format?
Because if you want to do a back-up, I would recommend using k9copy - it never failed me, yet...

I used to do that, too, before I got myself a DVD-burner...
I was ripping VOB-s with DVD-RIP and converted them to .avi (xvid) with avidemux.

Its not quite clear to me why it would refuse to rip the movie if you have the needed codecs.
It does happen sometimes that the DVD is scratched or dirty, and the ripping process slows down.
Another problem might be the DVD-drive itself. I had a drive that would perfectly play all burned DVD-s, but refused to play any pressed (original) ones.

On the bright side, these things are pretty cheap these days...:)

Well, same DVD worked fine with DVDFAB in XP64 so I was trying to do a little comparison in the linux environment. And the DVD had just been opened so I don't suspect dirt would have been a problem.

I'll keep playing with it
