View Full Version : What Desktop and Window Manager do you use? (Post pic if you're proud of it!)

I am currently using XFCE4 and it's default window manager: xfwm, I think is what it's called.
Anyway, I might post a pic later, as I have to leave for class in a few minutes. I just want to say I like XFCE more than Gnome, which I like a lot more than KDE. XFCE isn't "minimalistic" by any means! As far as I can tell, it can do everythig the big boys can, including running Compiz. It just feels a little sleaker.
The window manager is boring, though. I'm thinking about toying around with fluxbox or icewm. I've used fluxbox on a few occasions (mostly on truly minimalist distros for old computers).
So what are you sporting and how cool is it? And why?

XFCE is pretty fine.. if only they provided a functioning menu-editor.
I'm using XFCE or KDE depending on my mood.. I'm not proud of it so no pic. ;-)
The best wm in terms of performance and features I think is FVWM.. FVWM-Crystal (http://fvwm-crystal.org/screenshots.html) is a good startingpoint.
I just wish it wasn't that hard to configure.. ;-)

I played a little with KDE today. It is really much more memory efficient than I thought.
I made the menus a little more like Gnome and XFCE. It is not very nice, but it is my first day with KDE, ;)

I use Openbox as my window manager, with a fairly plain wallpaper behind it.

And, yes, thats a themed ubuntuforums in there, using the stylish extension.
Icon theme is 'ALLBLACK' from *-look.org.

I use XFCE in Debian with xfwm4 and its built in compositor, which is really cool and fast with neat transparency effects.

After I broke Compiz a couple weeks back, I changed to OpenBox. Even after re-installing Compiz last night, I can't go back. I love OpenBox; simple and effective. Plus I can boot up and log in in less than a minute with OpenBox. With GNOME (I haven't tested with Compiz yet, but I think it's longer), it takes about a minute thirty to two minutes.

I have Gnome, KDE, KDE4, Xfce, and Fluxbox :p
Now the fact that I actually have KDE may be misleading - if at all possibe, I try not to touch it with a 39 & 1/2 foot poll, (same as windows)!!!
(But I do like all the KDE programs) ;)
oh, yeah, Gnome is my main one all the way :p

I'm a KDE fan myself. Love the options and functionality and find it much snappier to respond than Gnome. XFCE would be my favorite if their menu editor didn't suck bullocks. Not to mention most XFCE distros are riddles with Gnome stuff now anyway. Fluxbox seems nice but haven't had much practice with it yet.

I agree that KDE tends to be faster sometimes, like when you're just going through the menus - KDE it instant pretty much, and gnome inserts a delay I believe, so I think that gnome could be just as fast if they change some options, but personally, I just do not like the KDE feel, I just seems strange... but like I said all the apps are great :p

I use Gnome with Compiz, but i only have a handful of plugins enabled, i like a more modest desktop.

Gnome + Compiz Fusion + Emerald + AWN and keeping it simple... Application shortcuts + system tray + clock + volume control on top panel and window list + Main menu + file manager + desktop switcher + quit on AWN bar.
Keeps almost all Compiz plugins active ... mostly for showoff, since I only use a handful of them.
I also have KDE and XFCE which are configured to look the same, except I can't get CF to work in XFCE thus no AWN but another panel centered on the bottom of the screen.
Still learning how to use Fluxbox, which is by far the fastest.

OK here are screenshots (I do have a launcher panel down there at the bottom :)):

Here is my desktop. My window borders are pretty boring, it's one of the ones that comes with Xubuntu, but my icon theme is "Xquisite" from *-look.org.
My inactive windows are slightly transparent, as are my toolbars. My windows also have shadows; all thanks to the built in compositor. Very sexy.
I realize I'm not very creative. My setup is almost the same as out-of-the-box Xubuntu, but with a few more toolbar launchers. But what can I say? They got it right!
