install the latest wine from the page i linked
install cedega and the latest engine (6.0.5 i think)
pop the disk in, open it in cedega and choose setup.exe from the disk folder and that was it, it works perfectly for me now
im in free from windows for a while!! im still keeping my dual boot incase but my windows partition is prolly ganna just collect dust now
if this works with cedega it might work with crossover or just straight wine, i didnt try those

if only wine, cedega, and crossover would all merge, and be completely free...that would be awesome.

Wine is free.
Cedega is non-free, and does not contribute back to Wine.
Crossover is non-free, but does contribute to Wine and even pays developers to work on it full-time.
Now that's awesome!

Apparently it can be done. There aren't many details in the WineHQ App database that I found, and you'd have thought the ability to run Office 2007 would have attracted more attention in the version notes / community or something.

Oh my, that is awesome! Office 2007 is way more user friendly for me than OpenOffice.org. Thanks for the tip. I can't believe even the Ribbon UI works awesome.

I'm sure there must be a better, cheaper way (free) of doing this with an openoffice docx plugin.
Just doing a quick internet search brings up:
Novell plugin downloads:
http://download.novell.com/SummaryFree.jsp?buildid=ESrjfdE4U58%7E
and a nice how to to get it working in ubuntu:
http://www.blogmanno.com/?q=node/64
This way you don't need to buy m$ office 2007, you don't need to buy cedega, and you don't need to mess around with wine.

It would be easier if you just decided to use odf (open document format) documents. For sure your school could not compel you to use a proprietary system or proprietary formats...
No school can force students to use any particular brand of a product, be it a pencil, a bag, a car, a calculator or software... In fact, that would not only be illegal but also a sign of corruption...

they gave us the software for free so i cant complain
and its not illegal, hence school uniforms, only ti calculators are allowed into new york state exams, and even the biggest example, they tell you have books to buy before semester

Oh. I always thought USA was the land of opportunities and freedom. Now I see I was wrong. Better live here!
School uniforms?? Are you on army or in a school?? Only texas instruments allowed? And people don't complain or don't go to courts in order to defend their rights?? Don't you have a constitution or something like that?
I don't want to be rude or something but I'm really astonished!!
School uniforms... Disgusting. I even don't have to talk about the parents reaction and the legal actions against it, cause in the first place I would like to see someone trying to impose that kind of rules over the students of my country... lol

OP - which Office 2007 programs did you try?
Watching the previously posted YouTube video I could see Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint and (I think) OneNote. I'm really curious about Outlook, Access and Visio.
This is pretty hot news. I am not a huge MS fan, else I wouldn't be using Linux. However, it is only fair to give them credit where credit is due. Unlike Vista, Office 2007 is a good product, and Open Office is a couple of generations behind.
I have an Office 2007 license and if I can use it on Ubuntu - well that'd be pretty awesome.

Will you complain when you need the next version to deal with certain inconsistencies with OOXML? And then next, so on and so forth?

Some people are just addicted to MS software, so the management or what have you push it through. Or MS will give it for free, or even pay cash. This includes schools as well as governments, around the world really.

As for the rest, I've been disappointed myself, some people don't care, are ignorant, or are just puppets. However, there are people that do care, and try to preserve the freedoms the founders intended. That's important to remember. :) America is a diverse place.
Anyway, what country do you live in zetetic? :KS

I don't wanna go too much off-topic but I think Office 2007 isn't necessary. Hasn't there been an app that can convert odf to docx and the other way around?
IIRC you can install it with Automatix.
IMO a much cleaner solution.
EDIT: seems Rhubarb beat me to it. Although installing it via Automatix is much easier/faster.

AND NOW IM FREE FROM WINDOWS AGAIN!!!
Free from windows, but (still) locked into non-free software, with a proprietary format. That's not the kind of freedom I want. RMS rant aside though, I am always amazed at what the WINE dev team manages in every release. That project really can't be easy! I think MS really needs to get in on that while they still can. If they teamed up with the WINE team to make windows software easier to run on Linux, then they would maintain software sales, and better their own self image. Like that would happen through right?
Anyway, Office 07: Welcome to Linux!

I'm in the United States and I've never had to wear uniforms to school nor do I know anyone who does. I'm currently attending community college and they have both Internet Explorer and Firefox installed. It would be nice if they also installed Opera (for those that choose to use it) and OpenOffice for those who want interoperability without paying for MS Office.

I use OOo to convert between them for my friends. Though, admittedly, I've never tried to go *to* docx. Nobody's asked for anything so ludicrous. But when people get docx's and can't open them with their MS Office 2003, I convert them to doc

i see no reason why not if it works another way it might work, why not try it out?

all of them worked as far as i could tell ((i dont use all of them regularly to really test them, outlook worked but the internet connection and set up was SLOW!

true but not locked into an obsolete operating system, so its much better than the previous state

If possible, don't save any of your master documents to office 2007 format.
If required, you can save a copy of it to office 2007 to hand to a teacher or something.
Here are some very good reasons why:
http://www.sutor.com/newsite/blog-open/?p=2031
"Saving your documents in OOXML format right now is probably
about the riskiest thing you can do if you are concerned with
long term interoperability."

How exactly did you run setup.exe? When I try the cedega install dialog and select Setup.exe from the disc, nothing seems to happen. I have done exactly what you said on a fresh ubuntu gutsy install. Please help!

George Carlin put it best:
Another bunch of ignorant bull about your children: school uniforms. Bad theory! The idea that if kids wear uniforms to school, it helps keep order. Hey! Don't these schools do enough damage makin' all these children think alike? Now they're gonna get 'em to look alike, too?
And it's not even a new idea; I first saw it in old newsreels from the 1930s, but it was hard to understand, because the narration was in German!

I think Office 2007 is better then OpenOffice 2.3 in terms of features and UI. But I think forcing students to use docx is messed up. I would personally b**ch out everyone in that school.
