I just read that 6.06.02 has been released.... which makes me ask:

What are the differences between 7.10 and 6.06.02?

Thanks :)

6.06 or dapper duck is the stable release or LTS (long term support) version. Its design is for rock solid stability for mission critical applications.

7.10 is the unstable, not meaning that it is unstable, but contains experimental or new technology. this is best choice for most people, espicially for desktop use.

actually, 6.06 is called "dapper drake", not dapper duck. Just thought I would let you know. :)

6.06.2 is a respin of Dapper Drake containing several hundred megabytes of updates from the original release. It saves you from having to download ~300 MB of stuff from the commerical dapper drake CD. Since there are a lot of those floating around, it makes sense to do the respin as that is quicker and easier than loading the commerical disk and waiting for all of the updates to download and install.

....so other than experimental or "new" technology:
- are they the same?
- are the repos common to both?

I'm just asking because I don't find a real comparison anywhere.... but I'm guessing that if they were the same, there wouldn't be two versions, huh?

Thanks :)

Dapper was good, 6.06.1 was better, 6.06.2 is the best Dapper version available. Same overall distro, just a rollup of service packs if you will. Which would you rather load on your machine? XP or XP SP2? Better answer: Dapper 6.06.2

The version number corresponds to the date it was released. Dapper Drake was released in June of 2006 and Gutsy Gibbon was released in October of 2007. So the versioning scheme is y.mm where y is the year and mm is the month (with preceding zero for months before October).

6.06 is a LTS or Long Term Support release meaning that it will continue to provide security fixes for longer than a standard release. A standard release has 18 months of support while an LTS has 36 months of support on the desktop and 60 months of support on the server. This is mostly designed for the enterprise business where they tend to stick with technologies longer than the home user because upgrading all the time is very expensive.

6.06.2 is an update to the original 6.06. Since it's release there have been a lot of minor changes and updates to fix security issues and bugs. If you were to install 6.06.0 today, as soon as you install it, you have to download hundreds of MB of updates which is quite annoying. 6.06.2 is the second update meaning that all of the updates since it's release are put onto the CD so that if someone chooses to install it, they won't have hundreds of MB of updates to download and install right away.

So the support cycle is different and since I mentioned how the version number is based on it's date, that means that 6.06.2 has older software than 7.10. For example, I believe 6.06.2 still have Firefox 1.5 where as the newest version of Ubuntu has 2.0 and Hardy Heron (the next release currently in alpha testing) has Firefox 3. While Dapper Drake has an older version of Firefox, the Ubuntu team does whats called "back-porting" where they will fix bugs and security issues in an out of date program by finding the fixes in a more recent version. They do not, however, add new features. So even though Firefox 1.5 is being updated for security reasons, it does not include new features introduced in Firefox 2. So basically 6.06 has older software but is more stable and well tested while 7.10 is more up to date with the latest software releases and has more features.

I hope that answers your question.
