has anybody else ever sat and though about OS's and wished you didn't have to use one? i'm kinda tired of hearing bout the whole os wars and running 4 computers with different os's and worrying about file compatibility and what not. i acutally really miss the days of dos mode and not having to deal with some stupid interface.

Are you saying you would like a situation where only one operating system existed??? A monopoly??? And so no one could create or use any other operating system???

Sorry if a did not understood you correctly, but it seems that's what you were saying.

i meant more along the lines of what you deal with when you turn on your computer. i see all the fancy pieces of windows and mac that make it more glitsy and pretty but other than looking nice it doesn't really do anything for me. i find most of my time on linux using the terminal for everything. i guess what i'm trying to say is i'm kinda tired of desktop appearances. just give me a black screen with a blinkin dash awaiting for me to input a command.

My first os was apple-dos running an Apple-2e, getting my first ibm-clone (with msdos) didn't change much for me..

I think I understand what you mean though.. in the past things seemed to be much simpler, not too much choice in os's or software, and the quality generally sucked! Still.. I had the best of times..
Today you hear a lot of people whining about not getting the freaking windows wobbling, eventhough they reinstalled there os 26+ times, ignorant and spoiled brats they are! ;-)

Still.. if I look back at the days of my brand-new shiny Apple-2E, I see the great choice I have today, and more then ever the freedom to get things done my way..
These are great times!

just give me a black screen with a blinkin dash awaiting for me to input a command.

then just do a command line install if you don't like gui's.

Stick with what works, and don't think about it.

DOS was an OS, and there were other OS's it competed with, so nothing has changed.

If whatever you are using now is what works for you, stick with it.

Ok :)

But with linux you can have just a black screen with a blinkin dash...

I also prefer to use the console.

funny thing is, OSes were even more different back then than now.
