View Full Version : [SOLVED] Blender crashes

I have looked through a lot of threads but none can fix this problem. When I start blender and render something, then make a change and rerender, it freezes up. I press Ctrl+Alt+Bksp and it logs out but I can't log back in, it just freezes at a black screen. I then reboot.

So to summarize:
1) Open Blender
2) Render something
3) Render it again

I have used 2.44 from the repos and 2.45 from blender.org

What type of graphics card are you using? Have you enabled desktop effects (Compiz)? Please post the content of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

it seems to be a graphics problem, Blender doesn't work properly when Compiz is enabled on my system (laptop) with intel graphics.

I tried using metacity by running "metacity --replace" but it still crashed.

/etc/X11/xorg/conf
# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I am using a ATi FireGL V5250 (laptop CAD version of the X1700.)

Some time ago when I used the "ati" driver, it would give me similar freezes with Blender.

Is there a particular reason why you disabled "fglrx" and returned to "ati"? fglrx is not only more stable but also much faster with OpenGL applications such as Blender.

where in there does it say i'm using ATi? Every Line I see says Driver "fglrx"

Oops. I saw "ati" in the device sections, but it was in fact a Boardname line, not a Driver line.

I just found out that it only crashes on the 2nd time I close the render screen... So for now I'll survive by just never closing the render window

Marked as SOLVED.

This is not acceptable. I would not mark as "solved".

I'm having similar issues on latest builds (SVN) and latest updates etc. Ubuntu 7.10 was fine, but 8.04 breaks Blender during render if Compiz effects are enabled.
