okay, this is with vista home premium 64-bit.

whenever the system needs to update the processor goes to full usage and the HDD clatters away just downloading the updates.

what could be causing this? i mean, even for windows, this should be abnormal behaviour.

Sounds like a bug in the update manager for Vista. The update manager shouldn't take 100% CPU when downloading updates. The hard drive, maybe because Windows is always in the swap file even when it doesn't need to be.

Have you got a lot of RAM there (2 or more Gigabytes)?
You could have too little RAM, hence windows is using the swap drive.

Also, do you have IE w/ tabs and a bunch of other windows/apps open?
