View Full Version : What's the deal with Debian?

I just realized why I chose Ubuntu over Debian years ago. I went back to the Debian website to download a CD image to give it a try and came across this (http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r2/amd64/iso-cd/).

...

You've got to be kidding me. 21 CD's for the base installation? Or are the extra CD's just extra packages for those without constant next access?

You only need disc 1. It tells you that somewhere in there. All the others contain a snapshot of pretty much the entire repositories.

Edit: and if you have a decent net connection, try using the netinst image. It is very small.

all those cd's are for people who want an entire snapshot of the current debian, they provide all the packages you would find in the repos. the ones you would want for a single disk install would be the four at the bottom(see pic).

I just wish debian would have a live CD though as its normal installer blows in my opinion

I install Debian with the bootable business card, so I don't have to keep burning CD's.

I feel ya, i need a new burner. i have to brive people to burn disks for me, when i need something burned, i usually have to give them my thumb drive with the image & a blank cd, then i owe them 1, i hate owing anything.

at the boot prompt do
boot# expertgui

which will give the graphical installer that you are accustomed to.

expert is pretty verbose in what it asks you. For GUI-centric people, I usually recommend installgui instead.
